I am switching from dish to direct. can i use an external hard drive to take content off dish and use it on my direct dvr

You would need to get a recoder and play back all your shows. If you are doing HD transfers you will need something like the hauppage PVR HD PVR Product overview (http://hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html)

There is no way to move programs between the two providers using a hard disk.
