Here is a preliminary list of upcoming matches of the 2007-2008 season that will be broadcast LIVE in HD on WorldSportHD channel. Please note, that schedules and games are subject to change. I will be updating this list as new games or schedule changes are announced.

Just got a word from Paul:

Hello Folks

I've noticed there are a few doubts about what games we'll be showing next season, when we start with La Liga etc...

Well the good news is that we start on Saturday 25th with the Madrid derby Real - Atletico. Should be good. Real have been awful all summer ince sacking Capello - they lost the Supercup 3-5 to Sevilla last night..Atletico meanwhile have looked good (at last)

That's the only game we have had confirmed so far, remember Spain closes down for the summer! But we do have a game every week.

Sid and I think that the following week will probably be Barca - Athletic Bilbao or Atletico Madrid - Mallorca. I think Barca is more probable and hope so as I've promised my girlfriend she can go shopping in Barcelona. If we do the Calderon I am a dead man walking!

After that there is a week off for internationals and then it is full on for a packed season, which has more midweek games, as this season we finish in May to allow for the European Championships...

We've asked to do a couple more games in Sevilla and also Zaragoza, who could be good this season, but that all has to be confirmed. It should be soon.

Looking forward to speaking to you all on Saturday (8pm CET)..

By the way the La Liga report also kicks off at the weekend, with the first show out half an hour before the game.

Cheers PAUL
ps you cannot beleive how pissed off everyone is at having Barca - R Madrid on December 23rd. Makes getting a flght back to England real fun on Xmas Eve...

From Paul Giblin:

Hi there again

Well I am proud to bring you the proposed list of games for the 1st half of next season- for the second we aim to bring games depending on their relevance to the title chase etc...

I have to make it clear though that these are provisional. At 48 hrs until the start of the season a huge bust up between Spanish TV providers over rigths could mean changes. It's such a long story and Spain would not be Spain without some last minute crisis aimed at blackmailing someone or other...in fact there is a team that could be kicked out of the 2nd division tomorrow - the day before their first game (Granada 74 - but that is not anything to do with us).

I fully expect things to be sorted out, and if they are, this looks like the list:

(see the list in the first post above - Ilya)

However, don't be surprised if instead of seeing Real Madrid -. Atletico on Saturday. you end up watching Racing - Barca on Sunday (which is cool cos we get to see the Fantastic 4!). Not cool in that instead of a 30 minute walk to the Bernabeu, we have to travel 500km to Santander and its pissing with rain there at the moment.

As they say 'Spain is different."

cheers PAul

I wish they would show both gamesin HD on Worldsport. I assume that Mediapro will be doing the TV setups again so we'll have HD highlights on the game that isn't shown like late last season.

Ilya

More from Paul:

Just to answer a point

Mediapro - the company who supply the HD signal to WORLDSPORT choose the games that will be shown in HD along with WORLDSPORT...that doesn't mean that we won't get the late game at all. What tends to be the case is that rights issues here are a pain in the proverbial arse.

I'll try and explain so people can see the selection policy. What happens in Spain is that there is one station (La Sexta) that has the right to give a game free to air at 10pm CET. (they are owned by Mediapro) Then a platform called Audiovisual Sport has next choice - (they do games that are Pay Per View PPV and also a channel - Canal Plus that you have to pay for, but which a huge percentage of people in Spain actually get because they pay for it- PPV games are extra)

That means La Sexta get first choice (although there are clauses in their contract which mean they can only show a certain number of games per team or only one of certain key games - which is why the Barca - Madrid game is likely to be on Dec 23rd..)

To continue, a big game is alwys going to be worth more to Audiovisual Sport if they put it out PPV than on Canal Plus, so that is why a lot of the best games on Sunday are at 7pm cet rather than at 9pm, which is the late match...

This new season some teams have signed new TV deals with Mediapro rather than Audiovisual Sport and that is going to complicate matters. All of a sudden Audiovisual Sport have said that Mediapro owe them around 70 million dollars -God knows if that's true or not, but why say that now when they have had all summer to talk...

As a result they are not letting Mediapro- and as a result WORLDSPORT get a signal from any game where they own the rights from any team they have a deal with. That includes Real Madrid for this season- although not for 2008 onwards.

That has pissed on our chips big time for Saturday....unless they reach an agreement between now and Saturday midday..

MEDIAPRO do however have rights for Barca, Athletic Bilbao, Racing etc, which is why Sid and I picked up tickets for a trip to Santander on Friday.

SO as a result it looks at the moment (23.20hrs in Spain) as if we will be in Santander on Sunday. But we could be in Madrid.

I hope that explains matters a bit to you- i am still not 100% sure what is going on, but i know one thing. On Sunday post game if we are in Santander, Sid and I are going to a top quality restaurant, we are going to feast like kings and then we will pass the bill on to Medipro..or Audiovisual Sport or someone...anyone

cheers

Any one knows why they didn't show the game between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid today? WorldSportHD.com doesn't say anything about the situation. It's pretty crappy that they keep all the viewers in the dark.

More from Paul:

.Saturday....Or maybe they won't let us into Santander and we will have to drive along the coast 50 miles or so to bring you Athletic Club Bilbao - Osasuna.

I can live with that, The new-look Athletic, coached by Caparros in a Basque derby in front of a sold old San Mames - the greatest ground in Spain and one we have to see before it is demolished. I'm quite excited by the prospect and also worried in case there is a further change of plan..

We will try and explain everything during tomorrow's game, whatever and wherever it is from.

Got a big headache.

Ilya

From Paul again:

....now we hear it could be Valencia - Villarreal. Another derby. But this is madness. One of the strangest days of my life. It says it all that Real Madrid TV are not being allowed into Santiago Bernabeu. RMTV are Mediapro and don't have rights to cover their own club.

It is that bad.

Well, still no word on what live game we will see on WorldSportHD today, if any.
(The guide lists "Barcelona vs. Osasuna" @ 2pm as a new game - but this is obviously wrong)
I gues we'll have to just wait and see.

In the meantime here are the first results from yesterday's matches:

Real Madrid - Atlético: 2-1
Sevilla - Getafe: 4-1
Murcia - Zaragoza: 2-1

Not sure which game Paul, Sid and the crew finally made it to, but looks like we won't see it live. Perhaps a taped replay later this week.

No live games next week either: La Liga has a break for internationals. Hope this gives enough time to sort out all the ownership disputes...
(CORRECTION: Internationals will be played the following week: no La Liga matches the weekend of September 8-9)

What is wrong with Spain, this issue is retarded for one of the biggest football leagues in the World. Imagine my horror when last weekend I sat down to watch the Madrid derby only to see an old match from last season and the scroll at the bottom about issues. What a disappointment that was to see. Same thing this week, can't be.

The chart is now a little confusing.

Which is the "live" match on 9/2 that La Liga Report will be before ?

The Onscreen Guide shows Valencia from "5/26/07" at Noon on 9/2.

No, it doesn't look like we will see Barca this week. They went to Villareal - Real Madrid game instead. I guess with the ongoing dispute this was a safer bet for Mediapro, who owns rights on Villarreal. (Not sure when this game will be shown - perhaps on the wekend)

Ilya,

thanks for the updates which give us insight into this craziness. Hopefully things will be resolved and we can enjoy La Liga this season.

How is the guide info on WorldSportHD nowadays. I recall from previous La Liga seasons that it had problems. It would be great if you knew someone there to let them know that it matters a lot if the live games and la liga report are properly labeled as new. Of course after being aired new the label should be gone. I have seen some programs labeled as new while they are old :D. This will allow for a clean Season Pass for both la Liga Live game and La Liga Report. Sometimes I am not able to watch the live game live and just catch it on my DVR on the same day with a couple of hrs delay.

Ilya
09-06-2007, 05:38 PM
Chop-Chop, they do read this forum from time to time, so I am sure your comments will be noticed. ;)

As for the program guide, it's actually more accurate than it used to be in VOOM times, though still a lot to be desired. Of course, when the field crew finds out which game they are going to only one day before the game, hard to expect the guide to be up-to-date. :D

By the way, the Sunday's Villarreal-Real Madrid game will be shown on Saturday at 3pm ET.

Hello everyone, Paul here, i decided the best thing to do was to register so i could keep you up to date with everything.

I think there is good news regarding future games, The Spanish football league had a meeting about the TV dispute on Thursday and they gave the TV companies involved (Sogecable - AVS and Mediapro) a week to get their act together or else they will step in to resolve the issues.

The league highlighted the fact that they are upset about games not going out internationally - is Madrid and Barca are seriously pis*ed off that their games are nt being shown live outside of Spain. Clearly for them marketing is vital and they are loosing money from all of this.

So i hope that it could be business as usual next Saturday (no games this week anyhow as its time for internationals)...:)

However, although i say 'hope' I am not convinced it will be sorted...This is Spain after all and things have a hbit of dragging on :mad::mad:

Whatever happens i will keep you posted.

cheers everyone

I was in Spain last year and definitely want to go back to experience a "live" game at one of the "big club" stadiums. I am pretty sure that it is second narure to you guys now but it is something I want to experience now that the world cup is checked in my list. :)

We really appreciate what you guys do for the La Liga games and the great commentary. If there were any way you all could slightly increase the audio levels of commentary, as many times it can get washed out with crowd noise (this isn't bad, but it makes it tough to follow everything at times).

The final game of the season last year was a classic and we appreciated seeing not only the game in HD, but the WorldSport camera views being rebroadcast on other providers such as GolTV here in the states. Nice to see that WorldSport is making some extra cash selling its video clips to other broadcasters.

Cheers & I hope Athletic stay up again this year! :up

Hasta luego,

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Always nice to hear people are (more or less) happy with what we do.

Looking ahead to next week, the League have given kick off times...If we eventually do the planned game R Madrid - Almeria (this depends on the rights dispute being solved in time), it will be at 8pm cet on Saturday night.

if that fails we have two (maybe 3) options of grounds where our cameras can get in: that would be Valencia - Valladolid (8pm cet Saturday) Murcia - Atletico Madrid (5pm cet Sunday) and possible Sevilla - Recreativo Huelva (7pm cet Sunday)

Things should get clearer as the week progresses.

One big problem in all of this is that we record the La Liga Report in midweek...and of course that previews the game we should be showing...of course with all the changes that has not always been the case so far this season. Actually it hasn't been the case at all!!

Anyhow, there should be a La Liga report this week as well...check out the city visit, which has to be the smallest place we have gone to yet...the fact is that after 4 years we are running out of new places in Spain to bring you. The joke in the studio is that sooner or later we are going to start visiting shopping centres!!

CU all soon, PAUL

As you can probably tell, i missed the Villarreal game: mainly because we all though we would be in Barcelona for Barca - Athletic...So I made a major mistake and pomised my girlfriend to take her to the Costa Brava for 3 days before going into Barcelona for the match.....crass error. only an Englishman would plan ahead in Spain!

On the Firday we found out it would be Villarreal - Madrid rather than Barcelona and i was standed with fligth tickets from Barcelona on Sunday night and ag girlfriend who would NOT have appreciated being dragged down to Villarreal...So that is why Pete stood in.

Incredible game mind you.

- It would be more effective if WorldSportHD could show La Liga Report before Saturday - both from a marketing viewpoint, and also for the viewers. 30 minutes before the match is too late to "sell" the match, and the viewers want to see a match rather than highlights and color.

Also, it would be really helpful to have a set day and time for the new episode of La Liga Report. So, Thursday or Friday would be ideal.

- Please feel free to use city tour segments from the first couple of seasons. Many of us have not had HD TV for one year, let alone 4 years. Most of your viewers have not seen the first year or two of La Liga Report.

Wow! A rather unexpected score!!

Ok, back to Fox Soccer channel (which, by the way, is on a free preview this weekend): Island-Spain match is on right now...

Latest news: there will be meetings held with the Football League on Friday after their 1 week deadline passes regarding rights issue. If things are resolved, which i put at 50-50, then it will be R Madrid - Almeria on Sat 8pm (hallelujah!), if not Sevilla - Recreativo on Sunday (7pm).

Sevilla would be v emotional as it is their first home game since Puerta died. I'll let you all know what happens in the next 24-36 hours. PAUL

More later news still....almost certain to be Sevilla - Recreativo Huelva. Andalucian derby, between the side 3rd in La Liga last season and Recre, who finished 8th.

The summer saw Sevilla make some good signings and they smashed R Madrid in the Supercup, winning 3-5 in the Bernabeu. Recre meanwhile have lost players such as Uche and Viqueira and their coach Marcelona, who has joined Racing. He's been replaced by Victor Muñoz, but will they be able to withstand Sevilla's firepower in what will no doubt be an emotional evening in the Sanchez Pizjuan as Sevilla look to dedicate a win to the sadly departed Antonio Puerta?

Paul,

Thanks for the updates. My wife and I became football/soccer fans because of you and Sid. In these days of gushing sports commentators, you two are appreciated for telling it like it is. Keep up the good work.

Well I'd just logged in to bring you the same news as Ilya: We are back live for this week at least with Sevilla - Recreativo.

To let you in on a secret, when we were looking at the games to suggest, this was our second choice, but only because we thought that Real Madrid - Almeria would give us a chance to see a new team (Almeria) and I can walk to the Bernabeu in 30 minutes...... in terms of football, this is probably the best game on offer this weekend.

It's a derby. Sevilla are warming up for their Champions League debut, while Recre are finding their feet with a new coach. Shame their top scorer Simana Pongole is injured.

Of course we have the extra emotion of a homage to Antonio Puerta (who i am sure we would all rather see playing).

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to getting back into the saddle in terms of commentary at least. It's only 2 hrs 30 mins by express train from Madrid - the Ave train is the BEST invention in Spain - especially to someone who turns into a total coward whenever he gets near a plane (i.e me) - one day I will tell your what happened en Route to El Classico last season.

That will be another day, at the moment just the memory has me reaching for a beer.

Anyhow, tomorrow Seville - 7pm cet.We are back

PS Ilya .....3-0!!!!!!!

Thanks for the update, Paul! I'm really looking forward to listening to you and Sid again this season. Your commentary is enjoyable, insightful, and really adds to the game, unlike the painful Americanized commentary heard on some other networks.

I would echo an earlier poster's comment...if you could do one thing to improve the broadcast (besides airing two games a week!) it would be to slightly increase the volume of the commentary track. It does tend to get buried in the ambient sound from time to time.

Thanks again...I have yet another reason to look forward to the weekend!

Great game guys! BTW, sorry you both missed the jackpot...I enjoy hearing about your bets on the game score during your broadcast and when you win it or lose it...it adds an extra 'side-story' to the game's drama.

BTW, Ilya, thanks for the welcome. I used to be on this forum back before my old computer died. I forgot my old username. Am an old VOOMer...from the end of 2003.

Who do people think will win the coaches' "sack race" this year in La Liga?? Am curious what people think. Hector Cuper for Betis, Michael Laudrup at Getafe, Quique Sanchez Flores at Valencia, Abel Resino at Levante or another coach...?

BTW, if any of you have never stumbled on it, there's a good English language website for Spanish Football/Soccer at: SOCCER-SPAIN/ (http://www.soccer-spain.com/)

It's exclusively dedicated to the beautiful game in Spain and helps while you're watching the games.

Hmmmm glad to hear that the truck sweepstake is another ponit of interest...Thought i was in with a chance this week...

If I was a betting man (which I clearly am, but only to the tune of 5 or 10 Euros now and then), I'd have my money on Abel to be the first coach to go. Laudrup will probably be given more time. Quique is clearly unpopular, but somehow Valencia are 3rd at the moment....

There is also a feeling that Rijkaard could be running out of time unless things improve and quickly.

Speaking of which, I will try and bring you all more up to date on the coming weekend in the next 24-48 hours.

Also din't forget there is a round of midweek games next week, so it's 3 games in 8 days for us here.

cheers

Good news....not sure if the whole TV dispute is over or not, but it is looking very very likely that this Saturday we will indeed be in the Camp Nou for Barcelona - Sevilla.

10 pm kick off CET, the game of the week by a long way. Barca looked good in Champions League on Wednesday, while Sevilla lost 3-0 to Arsenal (who were great!).

An early battle of the titans.
CU there PAUL

Don't bother, Ilya. I've gotten back on and that's at that really matters to me.

Also, the shocking news that Jose Mourinho won the sack race in the Premiership... He's denied interest in further English coaching as his next move, and he's also expressed that he doesn't want to be the new Portuguese national coach. He said..."it must be another country, another experience, another football." Jose specifically mentioned Italian or German football as where he's looking next, but he didn't specifically discount Spanish football. Where could he go, if he were to end up in La Liga? He's most often connected with the Real Madrid job, but Valencia or Barcelona positions might be more likely to see change in the managerial roles than either Real Madrid or Sevilla. I don't think Jose would consider a club that's less prominent as he tends towards the ego-maniacal. Still, at Chelsea, he backed it up. What are your thoughts guys? Jose in Valencia where Rafa Benitez used to coach would be kinda funny, don't you think? He'll most likely end up coaching in Juventus, I believe, though.

I will be watching about an hour delayed. Looking forward to the Barca "fantastic four" as Paul called them. If Seville show up like they did at Arsenal, could be long night for them, but Barca looks like 2nd division at the moment. This game should be good.

So far, it's not been the Sevilla that appeared against Arsenal. Even though there have been chances, the defence on both sides seem good. Drago has been blocking Messi's way better than expected. Toure has been solid for Barca in defence. Iniesta has been insightful, but hasn't had a target many times because Henry's touch has been mildly underwhelming.

After one half, I feel like Sevilla's uniform is reminding me of Pepto Bismol usage for my heartburn. :)

Sound balance between the game and the voice commentary is much improved from other broadcasts.

I hope we get some goals, however...

Thanks for the great production guys in Spain!

An entertaining match...maybe a predictable final score, but no real surprise in the end. Barcelona wins at home. How they manage on the road I think will tell the tale for them this year. Abidal and Yaya Toure I really think are massive additions for Barcelona. As soon as Toure came off and Oleguer filled in for him, Barca conceded the only goal against. Am afraid Mr. Oleguer should consider another club because he's looking like a joke compared to Toure. Finally, a LIVE match with Barca! Thanks again for a great game, Paul & Co...

BTW, if I know anything about La Liga games, it's all due to you, Paul (& Sid). I started watching Spanish La Liga games in the 2004 season and owe it to you guys and your informative broadcasts and the La Liga Report. I didn't know anything at all about that league until then.

Cheers!

I think the general schedule thread (this one) should be spoiler-free, and goal comments (and other comments about the play in matches) should be in a separate thread.

There is a need for a thread to go to, to read schedule information. If you then get spoiled on the match, there is not much point to the schedule.

For example, I did not have time today for La Liga, due to Arsenal and Middlesbrough matches both being televised. And, I might have been able to catch a repeat showing on Sunday, even with ManU vs the Mourinho-less...

Hi folks, glad you enjoyed the game if not Sevilla's horrific kit (we think marketing obligations)...

Mourinho...hmmmm, there are Atletico Madrid rumours floating about, as well as Inter Milan. it would be great for us if he came out....all of a sudden the journos would be in demand and find a replacement for the sadly departed (to LA) David Beckham.

I liked YaYa and Abidal last night and we all had a laugh at poor old Oleguer..he has a problem in that he is such a public Catalan nationalist that he can't really move to another lcub in Spain, because all of the fans would hate him.

We also heard some good Ronaldinho stories...they involve him being out to 6am before having to travel for an away game (all be it a friendly) not great behaviour from a pro.

Anyhow, will write more on Worldsport website tomorrow.

Cheers PAUL

Awful kit is all I can think of. I enjoyed the game and the broadcast. Thanks guys.

I was somewhat dissapointed by Sevilla's play too conformist like you guys put it in the broadcast. But I guess they are not ready to play head on Barca yet

It looks like the next 2 games will be:

Yeah- R Madrid - Betis and Getafe - R Madrid will be the next two games...sorry about telling you otherwise on Saturday night. Seems we are still conditioned by the TV rights war, which seems to be toning down a bit, but still on. To be honest I am not heartbroken by the change - it has been 4 games on the road and it will be nice to be able to sleep in my own bed on a weekend for a change.

Not only that but on Wednesday, i will be able to sit at home and watch my Engish team (Second division side Hull City) play Chelsea in the Carling Cup.

Just a reminder Real Madrid - Betis is THURSDAY night.

cheers

Maybe with Grant as manager at Chelsea, your Hull city team will just have a chance...:p

Anyways, here's hoping...as it would be a massive embarrassment for Chelsea.
