The title says it all. According to AVSforum, Fox will be doing the game in HD but it will depend whether local affiliates are ready to get the HD signal. Report here if you are getting the program in any of the three above format with location and station.

I thought Ken said only in Houston?

I read in another thread that there are some rumors that some affiliate might be able to pass the HD feed. Not holding my breath for it...

Correct. Houston will be the only affiliate to get the HD feed. See this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=422079&perpage=20&pagenumber=1), especially post #19 by Ken H. Since it is not in HD I will be watching something else.

If it's not in HD, how can Houston get it in HD? Enquiring minds want to know.

What AVSforum has said was that it will be produced in HD at Houston but that it will be only distribute to Houston as HD. Everyone else in the country will not get the HD feed because they are not HD ready yet.

However, Dan Bell, vice president of media relations for Fox Sports, told TVPredictions.com
Tuesday morning that the game would be shown in high-def. Speaking from Houston, the site
of the game, Bell said: "It will be a test broadcast before we start showing the NFL in HDTV in
September."

Bell said tonight's broadcast of the All-Star game will be in 720p and it can be seen in high-def
on all Fox stations that have the "proper equipment."

Fox to Air Baseball's All-Star Game in HDTV
Tonight's broadcast marks the network's 2004 high-def debut.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (July 13) -- The Fox Network will broadcast tonight's All-Star Baseball
game in High-Definition TV, TVPredictions.com has learned. The broadcast will be the first
high-def offering from Fox, other than a special presentation of the film Independence Day
three years ago.

Since Fox has not issued a press announcement confirming that the game will be in high-def,
many HDTV enthusiasts have concluded that Fox would wait until the Fall before offering
programs in high-def. The network said last year that it would begin broadcasting at least 50
percent of its 2004-2005 primetime lineup in high-def, beginning in the Fall. Fox is the last
major broadcast network to offer programs in HDTV. NBC, ABC, PBS and CBS have been
airing primetime shows and sporting events in high-def for a few years.

However, Dan Bell, vice president of media relations for Fox Sports, told TVPredictions.com
Tuesday morning that the game would be shown in high-def. Speaking from Houston, the site
of the game, Bell said: "It will be a test broadcast before we start showing the NFL in HDTV in
September."

TULSA, Okla., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Vyvx, a market leader in providing

the broadcast backhaul of the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game from
Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Vyvx will provide both standard definition and high definition (HDTV)
feeds from Minute Maid Park, enabling various broadcasters to deliver the game
to millions of end viewers domestically and internationally.
"When it comes to the most highly viewed live events, Vyvx continues to be
the broadcasters' provider of choice, and the Major League Baseball All-Star
Game is no exception," said Derek Smith, vice president of Vyvx. "This is the

Do my above to posts end the speculation? Looks like chicago will get this in HDTV as we have the "proper equipment"

DarrellP

That leaves Portland out, our "equipment" is on the short end.

Frazier

Sorry this is long, but most of the Fox Owned/Operated stations should all have the equipment--you get the HD feed for the MLB All-Star game :D . Here is the list of those stations (I saw a schedule for all Fox stations equipment rollout the other day but  lost it...):

New York WNYW 1
Los Angeles KTTV 2
Chicago WFLD 3
Philadelphia WTXF-TV 4
Boston WFXT 6
Dallas KDFW 7
Dallas KDFI 7
Washington DC WTTG 8
Detroit WJBK 9
Atlanta WAGA 10
Houston KRIV 11
Tampa WTVT 13
Cleveland WJW 15
Phoenix KSAZ-TV 17
Denver KDVR 18
St. Louis KTVI 21
Kansas City WDAF-TV 31
Milwaukee WITI 33
Salt Lake City KSTU 36
Birmingham WBRC 39
Memphis WHBQ-TV 40
Greensboro WGHP 47
Austin KTBC 61

DarrellP, saw a reference that the Portland affiliate may have equipment in and installed. Hard to verify the way Fox handles their web sites.

Everyone else in the country will not get the HD feed because they are not HD ready yet.Everything is ready for HD here and in many other places. That is obviously not the reason. Maybe its because its too hard to figure out who is ready and who is not.

Frazier
07-13-2004, 12:43 PM
I'm trying to keep calm too. The schedule I saw yesterday said that Atlanta should be ready to transmit the HD signal, but until I see it Fox is still slacking.

But NFL in HD on Fox this fall has been promised. Hope they didn't cross their fingers.

The All Star Game WILL NOT BE IN HD through the splicer. This from the people running the splicer equipment at FOX LA.

I think the above post from foxeng at AVS means that if your local affiliate has the splicer equipment installed, It does NOT mean you are going to get to see HD allstar game.

After a great ESPN HD Home Run Derby you'd think that Fox would not want to be made to look bad. However, if they don't really care we'll find out tonight. At present Fox is not even on my VOOM favorites list.

The official word apparently is if your station showed ID4 a few years ago (they have an encoder) then you'll get it. This includes NY and DC. Having a splicer doesn't matter. There's no reason for a station to use an encoder with Fox's splicer setup. So it's unlikely people in non top 10 markets will get 720p.

Louisville as usual won't have it. FOX here never shows anything in HD, not even their LOL Sunday lineup.

Oh well, I'm at work anyway.

Yes, it's awful. It's widescreen, which may actually be making it worse. Everything in Lubbock is upconverted to 720p by local affiliate, so I don't know whose responsible.

Crappy looking Fox Widescreen in DC; it is quite an unsightly picture. Thanks WTTG-DT for not dusting off your HD decoder and putting it to good use. :down Time to flip the channel...

My local affiliate upconverts everything to 720p, widescreen is usually 480p ->720p and looks better than this. could this be 720p->480i widescreen ->720p???? or is it the lighting thats really messing this up? I know it gave espn trouble last night.

Frazier

My close-up shots look pretty good. Almost like 720p. The field shots are awful. I think the HD equipment in Atlanta is getting dusty too or they forgot to put the order in for enough hd cameras. Glad I didn't make a special effort to watch it.

On to Overhaulin' if I have to watch SD programming.

I only watched this game for about 15 mins because I had to go to work. I have DTV and I was comparing the DTV Fox 5 with the OTA Fox in NY. The OTA whatever they were showing was much better...actually it was like night and day compared to the crappy DTV FOX feed. So I guess I would have been happy watching the OTA feed. But it was far from knocking my socks off.

SportsCenter last night showed HD highlights of the game and it looked fantastic! This morning I saw the same highlights. I turned to HDnews and HDnews was showing the 720 upconvertion, not the HD highlights. HDnews needs to do a better job of not showing crappy 720p upconvertion.
