If you can, what is the procedure besides changing it out,

It has a 160GB hard drive in it...drive has crashed (heads) and YES this unit is out of WARRENTY...

I have a 500GB Seagate IDE instock, and yes I have tried and the unit will not pause or record???

Do you have to format it a special way, does there have to be software to communicate to main board?
