Will either DTV or E* give you 2 free HD DVR's at sign up? I think someone said dish would but I can't locate any deals like that.

I've had a difficult time making up my mind on which sat provider to go with, but I'm gonna put myself out of my misery within a few days.

godish dot com has a good deal but don't offer 2 free HD DVR's. I also noticed an HR21 at BB for $160. Anything wrong with me buying it myself if I go DTV?

Nothing wrong with going to Best Buy but just remember that you are not buying the receiver. The $160 is for the opportunity to lease the receiver from Directv.

Both companies charge for a second DVR... however Dish DVRs have the ability to service 2 rooms for no extra charge.

If you absolutely want two seperate DVR receivers, I highly recommend leasing and just paying the "Upgrade Fee" for the second receiver.... I really don't see any point in purchasing receivers... with a lease, you get a much better warranty so when that hard drive fails down the line, it's much easier to get a replacement.

.
To clarify, only one room will be HD, the other will be SD, but yes, you can feed to seperate tvs with the 622/722

And if both TV's are being used you can not record another program except the ones being watched.

Or you can watch programs that have already been recorded. I don't ever watch Live TV anymore ;)

Here's another thing.

There are trees to the South of my house. Does this make a case for D* over E*? I have heard D*sats are at higher elevation than E*. I plan on watching both HD and SD programing.

That is to tough to tell without seeing the location. If this might be an issue you could always find a local installer and have them come out to do a survey.

In 2006, Dish allowed me to sign up with 2 HD DVRs after a bit of begging.

When signing up for DirecTV this year, D* absolutely refused my request for a second HD DVR, telling me to request another "after 6 months of paying my bill on time." I "bought" my 2nd at Costco.

They refused to let you get one? Or refused to give a discount on the second? I have never heard of D* flat out refusing you to get another.

Sounds like they would just not give him a discount on the second one. If they would not let him lease another he would not of been able to active the receiver from Costco.

I've been wondering this.... after you close your account, return equipment. What do the companies do with the returned equipment then? Do they clean it up, re-rent it, and charge the new customer upfront price?

They are also used as replacements for receivers that go bad in the field.

Is there anyway, a new customer could opt out on new equipment and go with a used one at a cheaper price?

There is no difference in price... and you can't be guaranteed one or the other. 95%+ of Dish receivers are Remanufactured... even Reman 722's are starting to roll out now. Direct is very similar in this regard.

So to answer your question... no. Unless you purchase them on your own from a Retailer.

I want to switch to Directv from Dish. I just can not see paying $199 each for second and third HD-DVRs... AND pay a montly rental fee, monthly DVR fee, and programming fees on something I have to give back when I cancel my account. Maybe, if the company would refund the original $199 but they do not and it seems pointless. They just clean it up, re-rent it to another customer, and make another $199. I can not see how that's legal, but I'm every day joe.

I don't agree with it either... but that's how all pay TV services do it and it is perfectly legal.

Well, technically you could watch 2 live sat feed and record one OTA feed at the same time.

I called AAA number when I signed up for Direct 2 weeks ago and got a free HD DVR and a SD DVR for free. Just have to pay the 4.99 second reciever fee.
