Is the raw mpeg encrypted and all you can do is record and store your recodrings via analog transfer. like with an analog cable to a DVD recorder

There is no current way to extract the raw recordings from the DirecTV or Dish DVRs like we can with ReplayTV units and DVarchive.

It is my understanding that Dish Network records unencrypted data to the hard drive opposite to what Directv does. Like if you cancel premium channels and you have recorded a premium channel movie you won’t be able to watch it on Directv as you could with dish network.

If you recored any movies off of the premiums When You currently had them or a free preview weekend. You can still watch them even after you dropped a premium. I've got about 20 premium movies recorded right now on my R16 , and I haven't subscribed to a premium channel in about 6 months from D*.
