If your pissed that Directv, the 'number 1 hd service', is now 4th, this may piss you off more...

Cablevision Bumps HD Count To 68 - Adds USA, SCI FI, CNBC and Bravo - dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/99422)

I can't guarantee that is correct, or anything, but IF it's true then Directv is now 5th place in the hd channel front, with 1 less then cablevision (even after adding the 1 channel from the golf split)

The people who make excuses like 'D* is having problems negociating due to the economy', and other equally rediculous ones, need the reality check that every major telco, cableco, and tv company are not only catching up, but defeating D*.

If we don't voice our opinions, a couple of years from now D* will be a joke.

If you don't care that your paying money during a recession that could easily go for better things, then this isn't the topic for you.

This topic are for consumers, not sheep, who care about what they pay for.

This is a valid topic...the baiting comes from the adjectives that you chose to use in your first post:
other equally rediculous ones, need the reality check

But like Charper said, this topic is already being discussed.

And as I said fine; but why another NEW thread of what is ALREADY being discussed in numerous other threads?

In fact this EXACT topic of DirecTV claiming to be #1 and maybe being #3, #4 or lower is already being talked over . No new thread needed!

Bating, I don't think this topic is bating at all. Infact I believe it brings up a valid point which is D* has been asleep at the wheel and has become lazy when it comes to new hd.

D* also has not maintained its commitment to be the number one hd provider when it comes to adding content. Infact, the content that they have added is PPV place holders to generate revenue. Instead of generating revenue via their packaging.

I have an Idea for D* dump all the HDPPV channels minus the 3 event channels needed, give everyone a generic 250 gig DVR for D* use only, unless they have a dvr model for dvr capabilities, then upgrade the HD to a larger size so the cust can have a dvr, download all your ppv movies via sat in 1080P HD, down rezz when needed from the box and launch 30 new channels for all the space that the PPV HD is taking up. Now were cooking! The customer now has new HD channels, movies on demand, and if we add a Ethernet cable in the mix we now have more down loadable movies in the mix.

BTW according to nelson research, Broadband penetration in the US is now at 90 percent, so chances are if you use phone line adapters you can easily hook that dvr up to the INTERNET without any issues at at least 90 percent of your customers. Wad ya think! God I wish these guys would hire me! I would make them so much money it would be ridiculous. Anyone got 500 mil laying around so I can start my own D*!

When I put my zip code into the Where is HD ...
It shows 123.

It all depends on what you decide to chose as your version of HD.

IF I'm allowed to get it, it should be counted as HD.

fwiw, I have not gone thru channel by channel and counted the HD channels I get.

I have an Idea for D* dump all the HDPPV channels minus the 3 event channels needed,

Unfortunately D* can't dump all of the HD PPVs. About 19 or 20 are used to share bandwidth with the part time HD RSNs and NFL ST Superfan channels. If D* dropped all HD PPVs they wouldn't have the capability to show all the League Pass, Center Ice, Extra Innings Superfan and Sunday Ticket Superfan HD games. So when those HD sports channels aren't needed those channels are used for HD PPVs.

But the 13 extra HD PPVs need to be converted to full time HD channels. The bandwidth for Fox News HD and Crime and Investigation HD came from 2 HD PPVs. However, the new channel that came online today for the Golf/Vs split didn't come from HD PPVs. I check the program guide this morning and none of the existing HD PPVs went away.

I'm sorry, but crap this equally makes people upset.

If their 'unhappy', they should go, eh?

What makes you think they are unhappy, or were unhappy? What gives anyone the right to shoo a customer just because a company is too incompetant to keep up with competition?

I'm sorry, I bought into a product I originally enjoyed, I have the right to get upset if it's not doing like it did.

And honestly, this anti-customer, anti-competitive drivel done by not only companies but company shills that shoo away angry customers, make excuses, and just ignore customers in general is why the stock market is crashing and companies like AIG are off partying.

I for one honestly can't wait for the new democratic president to come in and bitch-slap all the anti-competitive anti-consumer crap being done by the companies.

I think it should be noted that if you do count the HD RSNs D* may still be number one. The list Zellio refers to doesn't count RSNs. I personally think RSNs should be counted. Yes RSNs a lot of times show the same content on multiple channels, but then again so do HD premiums which I think should be counted too, including west coast version of HD premiums.

However, I think it is fine to debate the validity of counting HD RSNs. There's reasonable argument both for and against counting them.

Now all that said, I do think D* is doing a very piss poor job right now in regards to the HD channels that they aren't adding. D* still has room for about 16 more HD channels but they don't seem to have much desire to do anything with that. So they shouldn't waste their time and effort launching D12 late next year if they aren't going to use all of their available bandwidth right now.

I certainly think that D*'s now slow pace (compared to last year) at adding new channels is directly related to the new ownership. Malone is IMO running them into the ground. Right now the financial numbers look good but if they don't get off their butts and start moving forward again, those good numbers will start to drop. Do they want to be like E*?

I just hope that some of the rumors about Malone maybe selling D* in the future turn out to be true. I don't care if it is AT&T or somebody else. They can't be any worse than Malone has been. Love or hate Murdoch, D* was much more aggressive about adding new channels when he owned them.

People who are unhappy should voice their opinions but voice them to someone who has control over what channels we get. No one on this forum has any such control so complaining here does no good at all. Write or e-mail Directv repeatedly and demand whatever channels you are anxious to get. If you would rather just rant on a BB that's OK too but some people take it as an attack on them for their choice of service and disagree with you. Everybody gets angry but nothing gets accomplished.

The Liberty/D* deal was officially approved on 2/25/2008. The only new channels D* has added since then are:

Planet Green HD
ABC Family HD
Showtime Extreme HD
Showtime Showcase HD
Fox News HD
Crime and Investigation HD

Of course today D* now has the Golf/Vs separate channels but maybe that was already part of their deal for the old Golf/Vs combo channel.

But either way there hasn't been many new carriage deals struck since the ownership change.

Yes there was but those channels already existed on D* on a part time basis and already had carriage agreements. I was only talking about brand new channels that would've needed new carriage agreements since Malone took over.

That's why I didn't mention the MPEG2 to MPEG4 conversions either.

Yea, I love all the talk about DirecTV being so far behind.

Let's see the count here is:

Uvserse - 44
Charter - 32
Comcast - 36
Dish - 83
DirecTV - 124

Even if you take away RSNs from both Dish and DirecTV and Sunday Ticket from DirecTV it's still not even close.

Amazing... ;)

I would certainly like DirecTV to add more HD, but since I watch Sunday Ticket and RSNs (a little) I guess I should count those channels. I also get HD DNS here, so those channels count.

The nearest cable competitor here has...22 HD channels.
