View Full Version : Which is the technology leader, Dish or DirecTV?
I Never said there was . So what the Hell are you talking about?. I said TIVO HD/DVR Is the Best HD/DVR in 2008. The link provided you with a list of Features. Thats IT!
You beloved D* is now going to be making HD DVR with this company. Understand so far???
and as for your last comment, You still have to pay your satellite bill and D*OD movies as well. So whats your point?
OK, so PC World did the ranking, yea I always go to PC World when making my decisions on home media choices:rolleyes:
OK, just get off your f*cking soap box with the beloved D* crap. Have I EVER once said that I didn't want Tivo to make DVR's with DirecTV? I understand completly that they have renewed their partnership. My point and only point when I started the Tivo post today was that IMHO Tivo will NOT be the end all and be all of DVR's, they will still have problems and bugs and may turn out to be worst then the HR2X series out now. Yes we understand that you say that the DirecTV boxes are POS's and that's your opinion, I have mine. This is not going anywhere so only one last comment.
For the last comment, my point is that all those movie downloads are extra cost items, not something that you'll get for free just because you have a Tivo. And also mentioned, people have been using 3rd party software to do the same thing with the HR2X's now.
That's all.

The important thing here is DirecTV will be giving their subscribers a choice and will continue development of both formats.:)

Damn Talk about Twisting things around. By the way I never said D* and Tivo would make a Flawless DVR either.

Unfortunately this thread is about who is, not who will be the leader, besides, one year from now who knows, E* and TiVo could be one for all that we know:)
So anything else besides TiVo?
I wish D* HDDVR to HDDVR MRV will start testing soon, that will be huge for me. But the current HDDVR to HD box MRV test seems to go nowhere, not a good sign.

good point. this is very important to me. more choices more options. while at the same time keeping the customers that like the HR series happy and the ones that love the tivos happy too. so really, no need to compare the two boxes or worry which one will be better. If it's going to be better than the HR series, great. If not thats fine too. We will all find out eventually. In the meantime enjoy what you have.

Can't enjoy if you only get to watch a few MPEG2 HD channels.

Hmmm,Tivonetwork?.Has a catchy ring.;):)
Nope just DirecTV's HDDVR+ and the new DirecTivo don't believe DirecTV will need use of another.:)
I believe you will see alot more MRV testing in 2009.Until then DirecTV DVR subscribers can use DirecTV's DVR Scheduler to record the same program on all DirecTV DVRs.:)

Well, when your DirecTV and #1 in nationwide HD what do you expect?.Dish was the same way when they were #1 they just sat on their laurels and did nothing but raise the price on their HD.Hey! that's what they are doing this year!.Who would have figured that one would come true again?.:)

Not unless Charlie changes his way of thinking.Right now Charlie's thinking is we use it and if we're caught.Call the lawyers.:)
Another idea is say for some reason Charlie was able to buy Tivo(which I doubt, don't think Tivo would sell to him) would he cancel previous income producing contracts?.Man! would that be a different Charlie losing money.
And for some reason if DirecTV was to lose Tivo?.Then you'd realize why DirecTV is keeping and continuing to develop the DirecTV HDDVR+.:)

Depends. There is no sign that Charlie will ever work with TiVo, because by all indication his design around will prevail, unless if the design around thing was totally made up.
Now if E* prevails, TiVo will be in big trouble, because no one will be compelled to license TiVo's patent, not D* either.
The catch is Charlie still owns at least $16 million to TiVo, the actual amount could be around $20 to $30 million.
It will be very beneficial for both E* and TiVo to establish some cross licensing agreement or even work together closely, if Charlie can save $20 million, and TiVo can have a permanent anchor to attach to.
Imagine the two best DVR makers coming out with one brand new DVR that can put the rest of the DVR world to shame.
Only if both companies stop being big babies and think for longer term. I will not be too surprised some time in 2009 we wake up find out both Charlie and Rogers have suddenly grown up:)
For many, it will truly be a happy new year, so
Happy New Year!

I don't know if all MPEG4 can be considered a leading tech.
But what I will be paying a lot of attention will be this CES. Only E* is going there, not D*.
I don't know if E* will unveil the rumored 922 new HD DVR or something similar. By what I have heard, the new online DVR scheduling will be much more user friendly than the D* online scheduling, but the E* approach will work for the VIP DVRs only, and will require the DVRs networked/connected to internet first.
The downside of it is of course without networking/internet connection, the online DVR scheduling will not work, the upside is if all VIPs are required to be networked, it may indicate more network capability to come soon, such as multi room viewing.
Certainly hope E* will make this CES worth a while, that will put some real pressure on D* too.
I don't know if all MPEG4 can be considered a leading tech.
If it lead to improved PQ then I would think it would, but both provider are using MPEG4 to allow them to squeeze more content into the same amount of bandwidth. IIRC, Scott has made comments like don't move to EA if you're looking for improved PQ since it's not an improvement.

The new 922 seems very much ahead of the curve so far. Should know more tomorrow:
1TB drive built-in, two way remote, touchpad remote, on screen channel control, entirely new UI, Sling built-in.
Wonder how much that puppy's going to cost?

this little baby is going to be the best thing out there! I believe you can record up to 4 things at once if i'm not mistaken besides all the other excellent features and capabilities.I would love to see pics of the actual GUI and not what's in the E forum which is a very unfinished version. come on D! play copy cat here :D

D* isn't going to roll out a new HD DVR this year, but they will make the MRV work soon according to today's investors' call, if D* does that soon, it may keep me there, all the nice features on the 922 may not justify the move.
As I said earlier I'm really going to be interested to see how much E*'s going to want for this box, I don't see it being a $199 with all the stuff their putting into it.
One thing I like about what D*'s done with their boxes so far is they've added all these new features and haven't charged extra for any of them, and all the HD DVR's from the HR20 up can support them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they offer that price for the new subs on a lease, maybe even less. No good features will justify a high initial price tag, if one can get similar features for free elsewhere.
The monthly fees may be another story.

Well after reading the full news release and seeing all the new pictures, I must say this can be the biggest news for 2009 as far as us DBS subs are concerned. The only question is how soon?

If this box records 4 channels like they state this will take away one of my complaints from Dish. I never liked the TV2 output because it really limited you when recording shows. Now if you can record two shows while you are watching different programming on TV1 and TV2 that would be great.

As do I. I wouldnt switch for a DVR unless I just HATED what I had (to many other things to factor in), but I still love to see these things going forward. Its a very impressive box to say the least

i never used the tv2 option specifically for that reason. the other being you can only use the one output for the tv2 feature which is sd.

No one is talking about "channel" here, rather how many tuners/decoders or how many shows can be recorded at the same time.

I was talking about channels all along and then you can and said it was 5 and not 4. And no Directv does not have 3 they only have 2. I don't include VOD for one primary reason. You can record it at any time to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Actually I do not believe the verdict is in that the 922 or the 722K for that matter can record both OTA HD feeds at the same time, along with the two sat feeds, any solid confirmation?
The only thing I read is now TV2 can watch its own OTA HD feed, but that does not automatically mean the second OTA feed is available to record on its own, though you would think it should.
I for one want solid proof.

Not better, but a legitimate argument CAN be made that they arent as bad as many on here (non D* subs are the majority) make them out to be.
They do the job fine for most, and have many nice features.
Thats just my opinion, maybe I should just be glad I havent had the problems some post (not to discount all of those problems of course:up)

From the other site they asked the folks at the TiVo booth at CES about any future projects with DirecTV, the response was "no comment."
BTW, DirecTV was not at the show, but they did get an "innovation award" for the AM21 OTA tuner. I don't know what to say, even though all three of my AM21s work great, should I be thrilled by the news? E* will have a plug-in OTA module that has two OTA tuners. One thing for sure, the AM21 definitely should look nicer than the E* optional plug-in OTA module, which is invisible when properly inserted:)
