Yea its a Good List . A few premiums, but not really that many left on E* thats not HD, Unless you get into the Encore pack. But this is a nice addtion for the Showtime subscriber, and a really Nice Suprise for the AEP subscriber like myself.
But I guess Bet Jazz is going to be in the Platinum HD pack. So I won't get that. OH Darn!

Channels Dish will add that Direct already has:
The Movie Channel HD
ShowcaseHD
Showtime2 HD
NickHD
MTVHD
ComedyCentralHD
VH1HD
CMTHD
SpikeHD
Channels Dish will be adding that Direct does not have:
BET JazzHD
BET HD
I don't think Direct has anything to worry about? Adding 2 channels that Direct does not currently have, which interest only a small segment of the population is nothing worth Firing back for.

That ignores the fact that Dish is adding most of the national HD that gave Direct the comparative advantage. After this, direct will have more Sports in HD and Dish will have more movies. Dish is going to be much more competitive by being able to say that they offer the Viacom's in HD. (Most subs don't care that the channels have <5% of actual HD content, they just want to see those mainstream channels in HD.)
So Direct should be looking to fire back, if only to keep the edge.

Why? Dish Network has X number of HD-Lite channels while DirecTV has X number of HD channels. It's like comparing apples to rotten oranges. The only thing DirecTV (and FiOS for that matter) has to do is continue to provide better picture quality and a superior overall programming value and they will continue to rack up big numbers, while Dish Network will continue to struggle. Now, if E* were to increase the HD PQ, bring back VOOM, settle the Tivo case, get rid of the confusing programming paks, dump all the additional fees and stop yanking channels "to save customers money"...then perhaps D* will be forced to respond.

Of course they can. Out of all of those, the only few that would make any difference would be Lifetime, WGN, Travel, and Hallmark. Most people don't care about Premiums, especially in HD.
Besides, that wasn't my point. I stated, "...out of those they are ADDING" in response to your point about Direct firing back. The emphasis of this whole thread is on the NEW channels being added. There is nothing, aside from BET, that Dish is adding that will give them an edge over Direct. Considering they already have most of the channels on the list, are pounding Dish in every direction, have the competitive edge in sports (which is very important in the HD market...much more so than Premiums), and are still adding channels, they have very little to worry about.
Of course I want them to add more HD channels; WGN and Travel would be nice (the only ones I care for on the list). If Direct were to add every channel on this list you provided, it will not make much of a difference in their success. They have a long time before they need to hit the panic button (the situation Dish is currently in).

Not the MLB channel? This is the channel I watch the most. In fact, I am currently watching a good WBC game (Dominican vs. Netherlands).
If you have yet to see MLB channel and you are a baseball fan, this channel is probably better than you think. Putting fan and sports bias aside, the MLB channel is better than the NFL, NBA, and NHL. For only being on a few months, you can tell they did a good job at planning how to run this channel and the programming they will be showing.

HD on Dish is just as good as DirecTV -and yes I have seen both on comparable TV's. This whole HD-Lite thing gets old. They're both "lite" compared to OTA HD but still look decent.

You are probably correct, but in HD?
What I meant by "few people caring about premiums", I was putting in the perspective of competitive edge and the HD niche subs.
First, there are way more SD subs than HD subs and since pretty much all providers show most of the premium channels that people want to view in SD, offering a channel in HD is not going to make much of a difference. Whereas the sports packages are exclusive in both SD and HD.
Second, I would be willing to bet that HD sports packages give a provider much more in the way of a competitive edge than HD premium packages.
IOW, there are probably more subs that sign up with Direct exclusively for sports than Dish exclusively for premiums (especially since other providers also carry MOST of the premiums that people care about).

Speaking of the MLB channel, the Netherlands just won a dramatic game upsetting the powerhouse Dominican with a come from behind game in the 10th inning after being down by one. This is like watching a semi-pro team beat a MLB All Star team.

The first time they had the WBC, I could care less. Even this year I did not give it a second thought. This whole thing seemed pretty lame to me, and I am a huge baseball fan. I started watching some of these games just because it was on and it started to catch my interest. I love watching a Bad News Bears team beat a powerhouse.

ESPNU HD is my first choice for D* channels adds. After that would be more HBO/Max HD channels.
For E* to add these is a big deal for them IMO. Yes, D* has most of these already, but up until now it was giving D* some competitive advantage. Right now the only real advantage D* has is more RSNs (granted important to a lot of people) and sports PPV packages (less important to most people IMO). E* has a big advantage in HD Premiums. IMO more people would be swayed by HD premiums than the sports PPVs. I'd be stunned if D* had more MLB/ST customers than premium movie channel customers.
But because D* continues to rake in tons of new customers and lots of cash, they probably feel like there is no real reason to change what they are doing. Unfortunately for us D* customers that means not much new stuff on the HD horizon.

This may be of topic, but one thing I do like about Dish, that I have read many dish folks are not that crazy about is the number of packages they have. I like the fact that if I was a dish subcriber in the spring/summmer could move to a decent lower tier package. Directv does not have much choice. I have been with Directv for a long time. While I love sports, I dont really feel the need to continue to have sunday ticket anymore.
I have been thinking about a change, but only in the thinking phase. I see that there current promotion goes to July I believe, so that gives me a bit more time to really decide as changing providers is a big deal to me, since I have been with directv since 2000

Without having the MSG's in HD and YES in anyform, E* slams the door in the face of 28 million people in the states of NY and NJ. If r competition picks up only 1% of those potential subs (280,000), that will make that 100,000 churn rate for 4th Qtr look like peanuts.
Wake up Charlie and stop forcing us out the door. Even if you only offered the MSG's, YES and MLB on another tier for a separate fee, it would shut us up on how these channels aren't even available to us.

Best synopsis of why Directv needs to do nothing! And for those that can't see the difference in HD between providers, thats fine - enjoy what you have.
The fact is it is proven that Directv has higher bitrates and less channels per transponder. Tough to see the difference on a 37" Vizio, but easy to see on a 50" Pioneer.

Note that the stuff coming to E* in April isn't in this list yet so if D* doesn't add anything soon, E* will stretch their "regular" HD channel lead.

In the newly updated D* vs E* HD count spread sheet, E* leads D* 72 to 70 if you don't count RSNs and PPVs. With everything counted D* still leads E*.
Note that the stuff coming to E* in April isn't in this list yet so if D* doesn't add anything soon, E* will stretch their "regular" HD channel lead.

That is only true if you count premiums. Why are premiums considered "regular channels", while RSNs are not?
Remove the premiums, RSNs, and PPVs, Direct will still be leading.

http://www.satelliteguys.us/1737310-post403.html That list is Quite nice ,But the HD Alternate Channels in D* RSN count , Com'on now:rolleyes:
Thats HD Number inflating IMO. D* has 32 Real HD RSN's Not 48.
At least D* and E* Partime RSN 's Have games in HD very Often.
Those Alternates I don't think D* even counts them. :o

Remove the premiums, RSNs, and PPVs, Direct will still be leading. RSN's Count PPVs Too. But Alternate Channels, Thats a Joke For both E* and D* to count. Thats My Beef with the List. But the List is Great, Don't get me wrong. But You and I both Know the shouldn't be part of any HD count.

Only true National HD channels should count, like on 24 hours a day.

I don't disagree. That's why I broke out the separate "national HD" count. Different people use different methods to count. That list breaks out the counts in different ways and provides counts of the different types of channels (look at the line beneath each section) so however you want to count the channels you can do so.

My hitch cover on my truck (Dodge Ram Hemi, BTW....NOTE FOR HEMI :D) is the exact image you have in your avatar. I added an "R" and "S" to the Dodge name on the tailgate, so it now says, "DODGERS".

I didn't count 48 . I counted 32,
and E* side you listed 25, I counted 25
So your putting Alternates under the D* count but not the E* count?
Just saying Alternate should go with the Alternates. Not the Normal RSN's. If you do it for one then you should do it for Both, But I wouldn't do it for either!

I had Dish, Switched to DirecTV for all the HD, now they seem about equal.
My contract is about up, I would switch back, but I just love the DireCTV News and Sports mix.
Also DirecTV is working on Multi Room viewing of HD for DVR to DVR (MVR).
The Dishnetwork mix channel really is more of what Dish is paid to advertise in there with a little of each and it only shows 6 channels at once where DirecTV shows 8.

The 48 number is the primary RSN (both full and part time described in columns I thru K ) and alternates in columns M thru P counted together. All of the part time channels grouped in this section, I thru K, are the primary RSN for that area and not an alternate.
To maybe help clarify FSN Ohio listed at cell K38 is grouped with the RSNs because while it is part time it isn't an alternate channel. MSG Plus (636-1) and MSG Plus2 (637-1) are truly alternates to MSG (634) and MSG Plue (635).
But maybe I should put all of the RSNs whether they are full time, part time or alternate in the section especially since not all of the channels in the alternate section of alternates anymore like they were when this list was first created. What do you think? Would it be less confusing?

I say Put the Partime and Fulltime together Because the Before Shows, Games and After Shows are still on the Partime RSNs channels in HD. Atleast on E*, But I would imagine D* too. Thats Most likly 4 hours a day of HD during Baseball and College Football season on the Part Time RSN's.
The Alternates Might not have a game for weeks on them.
I would leave the RSN, Partime and Fulltime in the line up. Just not those no HD showing Alternates
Put those on the side, Next to the NFL ST HD.
MLB pack uses the RSN's so does Hocky and Basketball, and college sports. So thats legit HD programming, Even though they have a ton of Paid Programming during the after hours.
Plus the Partime RSN's, Represent the SD RSN when HD is Needed. So IMO Its the same as an HD channel.
So the Alternates are there incase of blackout, But they are still the same basic channel.
Like E* with the Big Ten. Your never going to see 4 HD games at once.

I took some of the RSNs listed in the alternate section that aren't alternates and moved them over to the regular RSN section. FSN Indiana, FSN Carolinas, FSN Oklahoma and FSN Tennesse. What's in the alternate section now are truly alternates. But they do have some value. If your market has both a NBA and NHL game playing at the same time, then the alternate is needed so that both games can be shown. But most of the time the alternates aren't used.

I don't know how E* does it but D* has shown multiple games on the Big Ten Alternates at the same time.
Also can you and your fellow E* subs confirm what's listed for E*'s RSN. I don't know what the current state of E*'s RSNs is.

HD on Dish is just as good as DirecTV -and yes I have seen both on comparable TV's. This whole HD-Lite thing gets old. They're both "lite" compared to OTA HD but still look decent.Quality assurance never gets old and decent TV does not equal HDTV. The FiOS broadcast network channels look just as good as OTA and, to be honest, channels like HDNet and TNTHD (bitrate near 18Mb) look even better since they don't multicast like the local broadcasters do. I feel that if you can tell the difference between OTA and the D*/E* version then you're being cheated. Some people don't care or can't tell the difference - that's fine. However, some people can quickly identify HD-Lite (it usually trigger a gag reflex) and have a right to be upset. Unless something changed in the past few weeks, D*'s HD PQ is better than E* IMO.

Because My local games are broadcast locally on ABC, Not on Big Ten. I've not seen Multiple games on the alternates. I just Know 98% of the time they are blank.

Then instead of complaining Switch to D* or Cablevision.
Or do what I do and Subscribe to a Locals only pack with my Cable Company and Get MSG,MSG+YES,SNY,and Comcast Philly, with about 10 other locals in HD for $25 per month.
Or subscribe to D* for about $55 + per month and Get YES HD.
Obviously you don't know NY State very well. Grand Island NY is in Western NY between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. There is no comcast or cablevision is this area. Your choices are Dish, Direct or Time Warner and very limited Fios. But that is not the point. Why should I have to subscribe to multiple services just to get my local teams in HD, (and according to Major League Baseball this DMA is also Yankees territory).
Even though I don't want to switch, I am basically forced to switch and will do so, after my NHLCI subscription expires in May.

.I'm about 3 hours closer to NY city then you are and I live in PA. I have a Cabin in Watertown NY. They aren't many Yankees Fans Up there. Thats Buffalo Country For one thing. Just be cause I live in PA, Doesn't mean that Philly and Pittsburgh are my RSN's, Because they aren't.
If YES was such a problem ,Why did you Pick E* service to begin with?
