Sorry, don't agree. I've done enough DirecTV to Dish conversions and have seen side-by-side and before/after comparisons. I don't see much difference at all .On SD receivers, I give a slight nod to Dish. With HD, I can't see a difference until the TV gets larger that 50 inches, then Direct gets the nod.

all i know is the 2 short months i had dish, they have a little dial in the uplink room, and when there is a big boxing match, all the quailty goes to them.

There isn't any discernible difference in HD either, at least on the national channels.
D* has better PQ on the HD locals, of that much I'm sure.

I've seen Dish's locals on a HDTV in both SD & HD and there is a little bit of compression but it isnt bad. The HD locals look pretty dang good...not OTA quality but pretty good

My brothers locals on D* do look very good though. I was practically stunned.

I have jet fighter vision which is better then 20/10 and I can tell you that there is no differance in PQ on directv or dish. I still think that Dish is better when you get in the 42 to 47 in LCD models, have not tested it above a 47 in. My friend has directv and I have dish and we brought our TVS to each others houses to test them. Directv has a brighter picture which in reality you do not base to say it is better. Normal people will think it is better just cause it is brighter. You want overall ur blacks and whites to base your quality but then it depens on ur tv what it can do in blacks an whites.
there is sooo much more we can get into to base who has better picture quality, BITRATE and other factors.......ETC.
So if this dude the op thinks he has great vision cause he is young. I am 34 and have way better vision then some of the 16 yr olds who wear glasses:cool:

if the source video was hd, being broadcasted on a analog transmitter, then it would be hd.
its like videotaping an hd channel on a vhs camcoder, its not truly hd, but you can still see the diff

uh no it isn't...its still SD. As noted above (which again proves my point) there was no HD analog transponders in North America. They are only SD
just like those converter boxes out there. Sure my locals are in HD but those only display SD so those converter boxes are not HD
Techfizzle
06-07-2009, 12:30 AM
what im saying if the original source video was in hd, you could tell the diff if it was recorded on a sd camera instead
Iceberg
06-07-2009, 12:33 AM
It doesnt matter if its in HD or SD at the camera. Its what they put out for the actual signal on the transponder
If you take a SD camera and send the signal out on a SD transponder, its SD
If you take a HD camera and send the signal out on a SD transponder, its still SD
The only way its considered HD is if it is sent out on a HD transponder

what he is tryin to say is if you take your digital camera and take a picture of your screen. you have it on a HD channel and the camera he is sayin is a SD model which is stupid, you take the picture you would tell the differance in picture quality if you look at the picture after you snap it. Clearly he does not know anything about camera's because the camera can be moved and not in the same spot as the last picture. it is not a good way to compare picture qualty I do have to say lol
And there is NO SD camera. what is a SD camera?

Of course, you're free to take your discussions the PM route if you wish...
Anyway, until Dish Network commits themselves to improving their HD quality, statements made by their marketing departmant (e.g., touting their HD quality) are cerrtainly subject to critique and criticism by customers and experts having a different opinion. Of course, Dish Network could improve their HD picture quality and most of the complaints would simply go away.;)

PQ for hd dish wins . Locals are the same soft tones via direct or dish. OTA for locals is a must if you can get them. I will install the ota tuner if cusomer has ant. As the pq and the ability to record more shows at once.
Side by side dish wins on the war on hd pq stop by my la office any time we will put any hd chanel of your choice in real time.
We will pull the same hdmi and plug it in to dish then direct so you can see the sharpnes and tone difrinces in bolth providers with out wondring what type tv input tricry we are trying to pull.
Proper viwing on a 60" is10-12' any closer bolth will look the same, also picture settings diffier on any tv lcd or plasmia and settings of picture for that set also need to be calibrated not just the standard, vivid, sports settings form factory.
PM me for HD PQ demo any time if your in socal la.

this is what I was sayin. Most people never ever ever calibrate their TV's. and then blame the provider for there picture quality. Directv's picture is just a little brighter then Dish's
pendragon
06-07-2009, 01:15 PM
Our smallest HD screen is 42" and our largest is 159". All carefully calibrated. I have seen DirecTV, but not form where direct comparisons could be made to Dish. We have Dish, 4DTV, FTA, direct OTA and other HD sources. I have contemporaneously compared master feeds to the Dish and OTA manipulations, and have recordings where I can compare the evolution of Dish's compression over the past few years on the same source material.
Anyone who cares about splitting hairs regarding Dish vs. DirecTV quality is wasting time, because both are very sad. It's arguing over two shattered plates. In a way I have to complement the technical ability of the compression engineers in getting the numerical bit rates of HD channels down to SD levels, but the picture quality has also been going down to the point where HDlite is rivaled by SDheavy. I cringe every time Dish adds more HD channels, because that means the existing ones are suffering even more.

Why people have to start a thread about stiupid things like picture quality because they have that service, is beyond me.
What you should be more concerned about is your own picture quality and not everyone else s. Further more you don't make programming choices based strictly on the PQ, the assortment of channels, the price and the equipment play a major part in the decision.
This thread needs to be closed.

I finally seen this commercial that this commercial that the OP mentioned (the topic of this thread). I have to say that it is probably one of the best Dish commercials in a while. For the first time in a while Dish finally made a commercial comparing themselves to their competition and did so in a creative way and directly to the point. The commercial basically said, why pay more for programming that looks the same on both providers. Simply put, with Dish you get the same for less. I see nothing wrong with this commercial at all.
