It must be noted that MLBN carriage and MLB EI were tied together. In Demand had to take an equity stake AND wide carriage of MLBN to carry MLB EI. Dish probably didn't want that equity stake.
Even then it took a lot of whining and Congressmen's intervention to even de-exclusify the DirecTV-MLB EI deal. In Demand (25% owned each by Cox, Comcast, Time Warner, and Advance/Newhouse aka Bright House Networks) was finally able to get a deal - but one or two days of the MLB season that year had already started.
Also not helping Dish is that they didn't pay certain licensing/whatever fees to MLB for certain games in 2006. The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball actually sued Dish for that last year.
As a Cox subscriber, I receive MLB Network (and enjoy it a lot). (You heard me right, I write a Dish news blog as a Cox subscriber. It does help me maintain impartiality.)

Let me revive this thread a bit.
I've just made the switch back to Dish after having been with Direct for a year and a half. And I'm very glad to be back as the Direct HDDVRs leave much to be desired in response to the remote and overall operation.
I see 'one button record' as a plus for Direct. And it would be if the blasted thing would respond to the remote quick enough, slow is not the only problem, sometimes they don't respond to button pushes at all.
I can set a recording as quick on my 722k as I ever could on my HR20 & 21s.
And now I see they are getting dual live buffers on the HRs. How much more unresponsive and slower is that going to make them?
One thing I liked on the HRs was the ability to go to a date/time in the guide easily. I haven't seen that on the 722k yet.

I noticed a show that was going to come on in 3 days. I hit guide...mashed the 30 second jump button, jumping ahead a day each time, until I was at the day I wanted. Very easy to jump ahead a week or more.

I had forgotten about that method, had to go read the book and I hate doing that!! :)
It is nice, but the jump to specific day/time is just a tad handier, imo.
One of the other things I liked about the HR series from D* is the screen formatting. Even with native off, most SD fills the screen with no fiddling on my part. The 'format' button on the remote is fine, it just isn't quite as good as the way D* does it.
IMO, overall the 722k is a far superior HDDVR to anything D* has to offer, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is all good or even all better.

Old Rupe kicked out TiVo and tried to do it on their own.
Big mistake. Many called it at that time.

It would be nice if they did. At 3+ years of developement and one of the biggest beta tests that all their HDDVR customers have been involved in, it seems like it should be a done deal. :(
When I switched from Dish to Direct a year and a half ago, many told me I wouldn't like their HDDVRs. I figured I watched the shows and didn't care about the equipment and such so much. But that was before I actually got to watch them get worse over that time period instead of better.
Finally the overall slowness (which I could tolerate), coupled with the unresponsive remote and the skip-to-end-feature-that-is-a-bug made me come back to Dish.
I liked the picture, the sound, the subscription plans and channel selection. Just not the equipment. Oh yeah, a bill that was actually understandable was nice too! :)
As to the TIVO lawsuit, I figure that is still years away from actually being a concern at the user level. The lawyers on both sides of the table aren't quite finished with confusing crap to delay or speed thing up.

Thanks.
I figure it is either good natured or from those that just like to grumble a bit. As I get older, the grumbling about things gets more often... :)

I'm happy you are getting the one channel you like. Sorry it took you so long to realize that Dish has great basic sports channels, but doesn't spring for ultra-specialized channels when the price tag is too high.
I am happy I am not paying extra for sports fans to watch channels I couldn't care less about. If I had a choice I would love to lose ALL the sports channels INCLUDING the ESPN monolith which is inflating the monthly subscription!
See ya
Tony
I'd say we need to take away your Man Card, but I don't think you were issued one, lol.

Just because some one does NOT want to have every sports channel does NOT mean that he is not as much a man as you are. Not every one lives and dies for sports.
