and the king is D*. I've had D* for less than a week and already prefer it over E*. Sure the equipment isn't as responsive, but I can get over that because of one very simple feature - baseball in HD! With E*, I can't tell you how many times the Rays were on SunSports and the Marlins were on FSFlorida. Both would be in SD 90% of the time. Everyday that baseball has been on since I've had D*, one has been in HD on the 24/7 RSN Sun Sports HD, and the other has been on the FSFlorida HD subchannel. Maybe ol' Chuck could learn a thing or two, because I'd rather have more HD sports than the following worthless channels:
LOGO
BETJ 'HD'
Maverick
Fishing channel

The only thing I miss with E* is the occasional Sox game on WGN America(could care less about the Cubs).

I don't see the big difference in DVRs either. The only thing that the VIP series has is a quicker response. A minor quirk is that when fast forwarding, when I hit play, it plays 10-20 seconds before where I hit play. Not that hard to fix as I can fast forward now and have it go at a faster rate without worrying about getting to far past commercials.

Welcome!

I see you mentioned on E* thead that you don't have an internet connection near your receiver. If you want to go with a wireless solution the HR2X's have native support for the Linksys WGA600N wireless game adapter in them. Or you can try powerline adapters, D* sells them for $25 each. Besides having DirecTV on Demand (which you said you don't care about) it would also give you access to Media Share for access to certain content on your PC and with 3rd party software like PlayOn access to some internet sites, like NetFlix, Hulu, CBS, ESPN and others. There's also the TVAPPS function, logon to tvapps.directv.com to see what's there now.

Also, make sure you check out some of the hints/tips threads for info on undocumented features/functions.

If I do end up hooking it up to the web, I have an older WRT54GS that I will put tomato firmware on and bridge to avoid spending money. Not sure if I want to yet, however. I may need to add a second router with G support to my network though(currently N only and would like to keep it that way), and then bridge the connection. I am still undecided though, I don't really see a need right now.

NP, just mentioning some of the things you get if you do connect it to the net.
