I know a friend that is selling me the Samsung Model SIR-TS160 High Definition Receiver for $30. It is unsubscribed but it is able to receive digital and high definition channels without a subscription. Any one have an opinion whether it's a good $30 investment?

How strong is your signal? That is about a second generation ATSC tuner. Probably worth $30 as long as you can be happy with component output.

This has DVI output so a DVI to HDMI cable or converter would give you digital HD connectivity - sounds like a good deal to me. Will your friend let you set it up and see if it works or not?

I knew my TS360 had DVI and VGA but seeing the TS160 was the generation before I wasn't sure. Samsung has been good at ATSC leadership in Tuners and sets. As long as it works and the remote works it is worth $30.
