After reading scotts big problem with DirecTV it's just another good reason to stay away from DirecTV.
"It seems like these termination fee issues is turning into a big issue for DirecTV, yesterday it was announced that a lawsuit was filed in California against DirecTV by California customers who have been charged early cancellation fees which DirecTV deducted from their credit cards or bank accounts without permission."
So apparently it's a big problem.

Dishnetwork does the same thing, as I had it happen to me. Dishnetwork was incorrect and I had to go to corporate to get my money back.

Dishnetwork does the same thing, as I had it happen to me. Dishnetwork was incorrect and I had to go to corporate to get my money back. Your right, Only difference is D* takes it to a whole new level with what they feel they can charge a person. Its Bull and needs to be stopped.
A person obviously can't pay for the D* service, so them D* GODs got to make it worse by putting customers in debt more because D* doesn't know when to stop spending their own money on NFL ST. Thats BS!.
Sorry but I know 3 people who had to pay an excess of $500 to get out of their contracts with D*. Stuff happends that people can't control. NO satellite company should be aloud to take money from services that were never provided.
So if I'm building a house, and the homeowner says " sorry I can't afford to go on since I just lost my job" What then ? OH thats too bad sorry, I'll just charge your credit card $200,000. Yea, I'd be in JAIL quick as SH%^.
Dish shouldn't be aloud to do it either, But it seems D* has a lot more NEWS and law suits over this , Then I can seem to find on Dish Network.

So they canceled the service the same month that they had it installed or upgraded to a new receiver (or replaced receiver)?

So they canceled the service the same month that they had it installed or upgraded to a new receiver (or replaced receiver)?Replaced Equipment, as well as D* sending return boxes out and giving them 10 days to ruturn HD DVRs, But by Day 6 , 2 days after boxes arrived, they charged the $480 for a NON returned HD DVR, + a Full months service for another $80.
3 people went though this. Not also adding in the $20 per month extra for early termination that got them for! 30- 45 days before they were credited back the returned equipment charge.
I even got charged a modest $55 on the 6th day from cancel date for the same BS , 20 days of me bitching I got it back.
Its not all peaches and cream.

90% of D* are with consumers.

We've had Directv since 2000. My parents got suckered into Dish 2 years ago when AT&T had a contract with them in our state. (Now AT&T have teamed up with Directv and dumped Dish.)
I've compare the two. I can honestly say that we've had LESS problems with Directv then they have had with Dish. We live close to each other so you would think weather problems and such would be about the same between the two, but their Dish is out a lot more then our Directv. Also, the package they have is crap. Seriously...and their guide drives me nuts!
Here is my two sense on Directv:
Now that said, I have noticed some disturbing trends with our Directv. For one, THE PRICE! We signed up years ago because we HATED Adelphia cable. At the time, it was the ONLY cable service available where we lived...and we lived in a MAJOR US city. Directv's whole thing was that they didn't increase rates as much as cable...yeah, right. We've seen a 50% increase in price since 2000. Also, we've gotten new channels, but they have been mostly crap that I wouldn't pay to watch if I had a choice. As for their customer service...at its best it is okay. I've had some really great experiences and some where I have rattled off more "off colour" phrases in a single breath then I thought possible.
I will say that everytime I have threatened to leave Directv, they have sweetened the deal enough to convince me to stay. The only alternative has been Dish (which I'm not interested in) and one of the MUCH MORE expensive cable companies in the area. I will give Directv that. If we wanted a comparable package with a cable company, we'd be paying almost $20 more per month - and we don't have all the bells and whistles. We started with the old Select Plus with Directv and then have gone between the Spanish package (and we are Irish...but you couldn't beat the deal at the time! That package has been discontinued and then brought back very subpar), Choice and Choice Plus for the last 5 years or so. Directv also has the 101 Network. That is where you will find me many nights. I do really like most of the stuff they show there. So there is one other plus I guess.
All of that said, we've decided to dump them ALL and go with ShawChoice outta Canada. We had it in Halifax and for the money...there is A LOT more channels that we will actually watch and enjoy. I like that Directv gives us the NHL channel, but Shaw has a lot more variety, family and childrens programming for the money...music too. We used to get MuchMusic with Adelphia (the only plus) and we miss it. It is far superior to MTV in everyway. Directv also has the 101 Network. That is where you will find me many nights. I do really like most of the stuff they show there.
So, I hope I didn't deter this topic too much off course. To be honest, I think Dish and Directv are pretty similar. I am unhappy with all the extra price increases and the fact that since I've been a long standing Directv customer, I can't take advantage of the "bundle" deals with AT&T that everyone else in our area are getting...but soon that will all be a distant memory.

Don't they have 30 days to cancel with no fees?Unless there is State law to the contrary, there's about a four day period.
The key to getting things fixed is to report any trouble early and often.

STILL!!!.:eek::confused::confused:
Corporate greed is going to really hurt DirecTV.First they eliminate including the DVR Fee from the Premier package(yet Dish's AEP still has the DVR fee included),then they won't authorize the R22s for HD unless you pay the upfront lease fee($200.) for another HDDVR and don't tell me DirecTV can't do that because over at the other site there are several posts that proclaim they did it no problem for them!.
Plus DirecTV is adding 24 month commitments? Sounds like a company worried about losing subscribers to me!.
Yet Dish has some issues too! their 625 is at least the best DVR I have used with 2-120 minute live buffers in Single Mode,PIP/Splitscreen(you can see and select what you want with the swap button). Then you think about going with Dish's ViPs and they only have 2-60 minute live buffers?? what's up with that?.:confused::rant:
Seems like I will be a Dish SD subscriber for a long time.

Maybe they were just holding onto the money incase you changed your mind and wanted to come back? You know, like some web sites don't delete member info when someone asks to be deleted, just incase they want to come back;)

Eight weeks?! Wow. Under what circumstances would a consumer be able to delay payment for that long and not incur some kind of penalty? Never.

Scott- you could have had your money much sooner had you used a CC reporting of unauthorized charges procedure by contesting the charges immediately with the CC company.

I'm not speaking of the past few quarters DirecTV got worse and more unconsumer friendly just lately I thought the exodus would start later. But by the numbers this last time it has already begun.Hope D* can stop the bleeding.;)
