I have heard the hd is a little better with Directv, but I think the most important thing is programming. Which provider has what you want to watch? Being a Yankee fan, I have to have Directv, since Dish doesn't offer the YES network.

HD PQ depends on your TV and how it is calibrated.
If you want the most HD channels and the best PVR, then yes, you should switch.
Each HD receiver is $7 per month after the first.

Right now. But Direct will catch up and probably pass them within a few months.

Another plus for Dish! is their AEP includes the DVR fee,DirecTV's Premier package now does not.

True. My point was if you have a cheap, small or poorly calibrated HDTV you won't be able to see the difference between Dish and Direct HD quality.
If you have a 60" calibrated Kuro its easier to see. ;)
IMHO, Dish hardware is so superior I would never recommend Directv to anyone. HD PQ is important, but if you have to sit and wait for an HR to respond, it quickly becomes less important.

Yea D* is starting to think their crap don't stink just like on my ex-R22 where they said they would authorize it for HD,then said OH NO! you need to pay for another HDDVR before we can authorize the R22.....WTF!!.That's another reason I switched to DISH!,that and my family wanted more Premium Movie Channels...39 by my count with DISH! AEP plus The Hallmark Movie Channel in standard definition .;)
I have been operating the DISH! 625 what a dream to operate PIP/Split-Screen I can see what channel is on which tuner and select accordingly.2-120 minute live buffers in Single Mode or go Dual Mode and select channels from the guide or view recordings on my second TV.On screen Caller ID that works! all from a single cable coming into my house.AutoTune and much more, what a machine!.:D

But you have been hearing the same thing all year, "After the new satellite is launched"; so nothing has changed. Really OK what did D*11 bring to the table? NFL ST HD, PPV HD? 2 Showtimes, OH lets not forget the most Popular answer D* has for running up the HD count,, Full Time RSNs that require the use of expensive seasonal sports packs that they don't have room to begin with, so in turn drop channels every sunday like they have been since 2005 during Football season. While still Trailling in Local markets served HD and SD.
You can have fun waiting, I sure won't be. ;)
I don't want to be anywhere near D* when the Premium pack shoots up to $115 and still doesn't include DVR or all the Missing premium channels cable Fios and E* have in SD and HD.
I've waited once for a Huge launch from D* and in September 2007 D* had one for about 6 months. D* only delivers High cost, Poor equipment quaility, and life sentence commitments.;) Enjoy your wait.:)

dish hardware is better.. dish software sucks.. not that directvs is muuuuch better.. lol.. signal is a little more finicky on dish than directv.. other than that its all about price and programming.. neither make it easy.. i know dishes is extra ridiculous..
dish has faster boxes.. directv has more features for home networks..

Hemi, cant really say that I am waiting for much besides ESPNU HD. As of now, D* offers everything in HD that I am interested in watching. And yes, one of those is ST in HD. So thanks to D11 for that:)
I totally expect D12 to add more, just really cant think of anything I want at the moment.
Edit: while I have stated many times, I have not experienced the horrible lag with my HR-20s, the latest national release added some pep to them. I can say in all honesty, right now, my HRs are as quick as my neighbors 622 on most everything.

The sad part about the D* receivers is when you check out the ratings on Best Buy the receiver with the best ratings is D*'s D12 a standard receiver.:rant:
Then when you become a D* subscriber and get involved in their DVR program you find they are more anxious to add widgets?(TV apps now) than fix Channels I Get on their DVRs!.:confused:
If this box is not supposed to be a DVR? What is it supposed to be? It's already been 3 years!.

Yes, I for one am happy that they are able to provide more games in HD than any other provider on their sports packages because of HD. Nothing sucks like watching sports in SD on an HD TV.
In addition, they were able to move the remaining mpeg2 HD channels over to mpeg4, which too helped out a lot.
That is what D11 was planned on being used for anyway, so to use it as an example for D12 is not very accurate. Why not use D10 as an example? That is the satellite that brought us from like 15 HD channels (including PPV, ex) to well over 100 HD channels (including PPV and RSNs, ex).

Should you switch....Only you can answer that, hopefully you have got some good info here, and in doing research see what fits for you. I switched to Dish and its been about seven months now, No regrets, though I have no "hate" for Directv. I enjoy the some of the few features Dish has that Direct does not and as you have seen also here, some like the features that Direct has over Dish

D 10 obviously did more on the NATIONAL HD front.

Maybe this might help as you can see the highest ratings at Best Buy for any DirecTV receiver is the D12 a standard receiver( this is how I worded it before). These are Best Buy customer's who rate all the DirecTV receivers being offered at Best Buy.As you can see the DVR ratings are dismal to say the least. It has become my observation as a now ex-DirecTV subscriber that DirecTV's in house DVR project is and will remain a life long project as the basic functions of DirecTV's DVRs are kept in a constant state of disrepair aka Channels I Get and this is one of many other reasons why I left DirecTV.

To be honest I had forgotten about this. Odd that they did not add them then, but again, not a problem for me. I am glad they went the route they did as far as my wants were concerned. Give me more sports options any day.

But largely.
I dont even know if I would go that far when it comes to comparing two services.
A better looking signal will look better than a poor one (all else being equal, such as tvs being properly calibrated or not)
Calibration is very important though. It can make an average signal look better, and a good signal look great.

More Conus, like D10

Thanks for your clarification.
What other basic functions of your DVR were you having problems with?
Your welcome.:)
For some reason the HR2xs and R22s are reformat(reset) sensitive just like the NDS R15&R16 platforms. The problems of slowdowns along with the wrong channels trying to record left me to stay away from season passes ect.(this would seem to be related to Channels I Get),The only solution I could find is the highlight the program in the guide and press the record button that way I was verifying the final result to record the program.
it also has been proved that while some are having problems others are not this seems to be related to the direct difference of design from the different manufacturers of the DirecTV DVR product. So because it seemed that DirecTV was only interested in HD subscribers I decided to go with a provider(DISH!) that seems to have the best interest of the standard definition subscriber at heart(more SD programming),the sad point being that the standard definition subscriber is a potential new HD subscriber something I believe DirecTV does not understand or cares to.

i have both (yes i can finally say that:D) and yes the 20 is faster than the 21 but not by a huge margin. but it is faster. one thing i noticed when downloading the ce friday night is that i began the download a minute or two earlier than the hr20 yet the hr20 finished the process 1st by almost 3 minutes. and from my experience the ota tuner in the hr20 is superior than the add on am21 for the hr21. i'm picking up channels from 50 miles away with the hr20. can't do it with the hr21
