St. Louis is in the process of leaving 118.7. Detroit and Charlotte have left 118.7 (they are already mirrored on 61.5 and 129).

Will there be a need to get a new dish soon or have it re-pointed? I have a 110/119 and 61.5. I live in the D.C. area and get my locals from 61.5. Will I need a new dish to get the new HD channels they're putting up? I'd hate to pay for channels I can't receive. Similarly, I'd hate to have to pay in order to continue to receive my current line up (Bronze + HD).

It looks like all the new stuff is on 118.7 and 72.7.

Nope. 110/119/61.5 is a supported setup for HD customers. The same TMP's that were added to 72.7 were added to 119 a couple of weeks ago.

Nothing new on 118.7, stuff is being pulled from that one actually, as some locals no longer need to be on that satellite.

I think that they are going to do full time RSNs on the 119/72.7 tmps. I could be wrong, but I think they are under a lot of pressure to go full time. Even if they went 7-8 full time RSNs it would eliminate many of the capacity issues with the shared RSNs.

Two of the five on transponder 31 at 61.5W were carrying something as of several hours ago. No idea what, but definitely something. The big thing I see is that they've mapped down VHI from 5575 to 162....I've been hoping they would do that for all of the AK/HI HD channels. The way they have them "organized" in the 5500s drives me nuts. Hopefully this is a test, and the rest will be mapped to where they belong soon.

With the conversion to 8PSK at 72.7 W with the Nimiq 5 satellite, how many MPEG-4 SD channels will Dish put on a single TP and shouldn't Dish be able to mix MPEG-4 SD with MPEG-4 HD to try to optimize bandwidth useage? What I mean by optimize bandwidth useage is that Dish could put 7 HD channels and a few SD channels on a TP instead of trying to crunch 8 HD channels per TP.

Digiblur told me this a few weeks ago about new HD channel space...

That's a trick question...since you have to have the space on 110/119 to add it to 72.7.

But with that being said.... I posted a run down a while back but here's the raw numbers.

With them having only 16 transponders of the 32 they are currently running in 5/6 QPSK mode (30 megabit a TP) that's 480 megabits they currently have. They will transition to 8PSK 2/3 in a week or two. Those are typically around 40 megabits maybe a bit over. 40*16=640 megabits. 640-480=160 megabit gain. If they consolidate that's basically 4 free HD capable transponders. So if they run 7-8 HD's per TP that's about 30 HD channels.

But you have to remember what they add to EA has to be added to WA. They can't just add it to 129 either, since the folks that have 110/119/61.5 would be high and dry. They need to get something over to 61.5 to fire up the transponders that E3 and E12 can not physically use. I suspect they will add some HD local markets that are in bad need.

Yep, nothing stopping them from mixing any channel types together. I remember seeing MPEG2 SD and MPEG4 HD together as a test one time, no point in doing that though at the time.

mike123abc
10-29-2009, 03:45 PM
The only thing that stops them from mixing is the ability to mirror the TPs on the 2 arcs. It means different encoding and muxing for each arc until the WA goes all 8PSK.

This because Charlie is a penny pinching fool that will not give the funds for these RSN to go live 24/7. bandwith should not be an issue, but here we go again we are dealing with Charlie!!!!!!!!!!!

Bandwidth is most definitely an issue. There are a crazy number of RSNs (25+ I think). Dish currently devotes 2 TPs on either arc to them. At 8 each, that is space for 16. They would at least need 2 more TPs for RSNs (Plus, I imagine, they could add YES and the NSG channels, as full time HD is a sticking point) Where do you see Dish having 2 free TPs, particularly with hamstringing them for future non-RSN adds?

It is definitely bandwidth. It would help a lot if they gave the RSNs with the most population in them 24/7 HD. Then the remaining ones would probably be able to show all the HD events on the TPs they share.

This is the most backward thing I've read in a while. Bandwidth is the #1 problem, and money has virtually nothing to do with it...at least not directly. In fact, with ANY HD simulcast channel that is already carried in SD, the carriage negotiations are almost all about bandwidth cost/benefit analysis.

When digital cable and DBS hit, the channel providers rushed to fill that new bandwidth with niche channels. This is why we now have such bloated basic packages. These channels have very little demand individually...the providers count on selling them as a package.

Now, as people move to HD, the non HD channels are losing their tiny audiences even more. So, for example, Discovery is rushing to get an HD feed for Investigation Discovery out there. They will offer very good terms to keep it alive. At the minimum, this HD feed is probably free to DISH as long as they are paying for the SD feed. But it's possible that carrying it could actually save them money...Discovery could offer to lock in their subscriber rates for an extra 5 years rather than demand an increase. (This is hypothetical, but very possible.)

So at this point, DISH could (hypothetically!) save money by carrying ID-HD. So now, it's a bandwidth cost analysis. Carrying ID-HD now could mean that they won't have room to carry one of FOX's HD channels launching next year. And maybe FOX is offering even better terms...or maybe they are tougher than Discovery and could threaten to pull their channels if the HD feeds aren't carried.

In the case of Premiums, it's a case of diminishing returns. Adding all the available Starz HD feeds probably increased subscribers...but when the last two are available next year, will it make a difference? Or could those two slots be used to attract a different type of customer. This is true for all channels...Fox Soccer HD will probably attract/keep more loyal customers than Investigation Discovery HD.

Full time RSNs across the board is probably not a bandwidth priority. They are going to have to figure out the best way to balance it.

I personally think a good compromise is to split them...put the RSNs for Eastern Arc cities on EA only, and WA RSNs on WA only. When an east coast team plays a west coast team, the game SHOULD be carried on both sides, just on different channels. You can still use the existing PT/shared channels to carry games that are only airing on the opposite arc. (Which would effectively increase that space, as EA and WA would have different games on the part time transponders.)

That's what the na means. Not Available.
If you go back to June of 07 channel 2 was uplinked and listed as na and it is still there. It was also uplinked to 129 as na and is still there.

The impending problem for Dish is that more RSN games are being broadcast in HD with each passing season. By next baseball season most, if not all, RSN games will be produced in HD. Dish will be forced to either dedicate more TP space to HD RSN feeds or show a lesser precentage of games in HD.

The problem with this suggestion is that it doesn't work for NHL CI and NBA LP. CI and LP subscribers expect to see HD versions of all games because that is what they're paying for.

I personally could care less if my RSN goes full time HD, I just want all RSN events produced in HD to be shown in HD on dish.
