At least 3 HD channels appear to be added to the PR HD Pak soon. A no brainer for Charlie, subs from Puerto Rico should have access to every HD channel on 110. I hope folks at Dish don't change their mind. :)

I haven't seen it on the uplink report, but 5253 KWYBD (Butte/Bozeman, MT-Fox) showed up in my guide some time in the last couple days. I switched to it and it was in 16:9 format so I am hopeful Fox is not available in HD for my local DMA. Strange thing was that the SD channel has program information but the HD channel did not. Is this something that will show up over the next couple days?
This is interesting because I called the other day (Monday I think) to complain about this channel being broadcast OTA in HD, but not in HD on their network. Then a couple days later it shows up.

It's not some channel that refuses to air HD programming, they just won't get there til March. There's a couple other ones on the uplinked list like that, too. I think it'd be good for Dish to be out front for a change on some HD programming.

It wouldn't show up in the uplink reports since it wasn't a table change, but I noticed very recently that Dish has finally opened up the bitrates on the 72.7W transponders with only SD channels. Since Nimiq 5 went online, many of the SD channels were sitting in transponders with 12-13 Mbps of null PIDs, holding the channels down to the same bitrates they had before the 8PSK upgrade. Now that the bitrates are being allowed to fill out the transponders more, there is an increase of about 40-50% in the video bitrate per channel. Too bad the video is still 480x480 and going through Dish's flattening detail-reducing filter. They can do far better than that with H.264, especially now. Here's hoping that more changes for the better are coming.
Sorry if this was reported elsewhere and I missed it. :)
Also, during the past week Epix was in-the-clear on 61.5W as 1440x1080i. It had no table entry (ch. 4835 showed as being removed in the 1/20 uplink report) but the PIDs remained there for at least 5 days and are gone now. The channel is supposed to be 720p so I imagine Dish was just playing around. Time will tell I suppose.

That idea would screw over SD only customers.
There are more SD only subs than there are HD subs.
What Dish should do is swap everyone to mpeg4 boxes that can downrez HD to SD.
Then eliminate SD channels what have a HD counterpart.
It might cost more $$$ upfront, but it will reduce wasted bandwidth.

But then you will get people that will bitch that their SD image has black bars on top or bottom, is stretched so people look fat, or some of the image (top and bottom) is missing, particularly those crawls on ESPN's or news channels.

They already do this with the locals on EA. When they have the channel in HD on EA, the SD feed goes away. Not sure why they don't do this on the regular channels too, but they have a bunch of bandwidth on EA for nationals now, unlike the crunch they are in for local spotbeam bandwidth.

I had read that DirecTV had turned off 5 TPs at 72.7 W (72.5 W) few weeks ago but hadn't caught up on Dish testing on these same TPs since I have been on vacation. It looks like the transition of these TPs from DirecTV to Dish at 72.7 W is going exactly how I predicted when it was announced that Dish would have use of all 32 TPs at 72.7 W around the time Nimiq 5 was launched.

Eventually, Maybe. My understanding from other friends in the soccer community is that ESPN has an EXCLUSIVE on North American HD of live Premier League and other major foreign soccer leagues for this season. That FSC can't broadcast these events in HD, even if they could.
I could be wrong.
That said, I think soccer has the biggest qualitative difference going from SD to HD of all the sports (especially for foreign games because the SD has to go through a conversion), so I am looking forward to al live soccer on FSC being HD ... eventually.

I don't see how they could wing that. They basically bought the sublicense for the 7:30 Sat. and 3:30 Mon. games from Setanta. Maybe Setanta had that in their sublicense, but it would be doubtful.
I must say that I have watched every ESPN EPL game this year simply because it was in HD.

It's still in the holding pen. The TMP HD channel was moved from ch. 4835 to ch. 263 as part of the 1/20 uplink. Pretty sure the SD channel is still on ch. 292 as it was before. The wait continues...

I go away for one day, and the result is posts like this that are so far from the truth, it is astonishing.
This post is equivalent to saying that Bill Clinton is a Reptilian Alien who was fighting the Gray Aliens, and who was taking orders from Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa.

1 - Fox has been broadcasting soccer in HD on Dish Network since the fall of 2009. They were doing it on the HD RSNs, and Dish provided an extra feed on the HD version of Channel 444 for those areas where the local RSN was not in HD (or had a press conference pre-emption).
Their plan was to launch FSC in HD on January 1st with about a half dozen EPL and Serie A matches in HD per week and Champions League in HD as well. But, just like with BBC America, no cable or satellite provider had space that they wanted to use on January 1st.
2 - Fox owns all the USA rights to Champions League, and EPL for the next several years. ESPN only has some rights to MLS. Fox leased rights to ESPN for 1-2 matches per week of EPL, and GolTV leased rights to ESPN for 1-3 matches per week of La Liga. ESPN already has HD channels (ESPN2-HD) so they broadcast the HD feed when they can get it.
3 - Setanta USA failed to make their payments to Fox for sub-leased rights to EPL and Champions League. As of March 1st, they are over. On March 1st, Fox launches their own replacement "Fox Soccer Plus" which will be in HD.
4 - FSC's studios are already setup for HD and they have access to at least 6 matches a week in HD, and all other European programming is already in 16x9 and in 576i, so it will look a lot better than SD 480i in 4x3.
PS The temp channel could be Fox Soccer Plus, and the mapdown to 149 could be a Dish Engineering mistake, since FSC and Fox Soccer Plus will have different programming.

I go away for one day, and the result is posts like this that are so far from the truth, it is astonishing.
This post is equivalent to saying that Bill Clinton is a Reptilian Alien who was fighting the Gray Aliens, and who was taking orders from Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa.

The logo on the regular FSC channel (SD) right now says:
" FSC HD Live "
indicating that the SD feed is now downconverted from the HD feed...
My guess is that the announcement of " Fox Soccer Plus " as a premium channel for which Fox will receive a $$ premium, allows them to charge a more nominal fee - at least in the short term - for FSC-HD - especially for those satellite or cable providers who are willing to launch the channel earlier than others.

It's not political - there is an actual series of "non-fiction" books that have sold millions of copies claiming that Bill Clinton (and other world leaders) are actually Reptilian Aliens fighting the Gray Aliens.
To make a complete circle, the author was formerly a professional goalkeeper in the English soccer league.

Several years back, HD Net carried a few MLS games each week and they looked great in HD! Sadly, they dropped them.

thats great, I would love FSC HD, good thing that talk that FSC hd was actually FSC+hd appears to be wrong and we will get it without a premium. They seem to be broadcasting in HD, but there is really no way to tell, the logo says HD on the channel.

The press release for FS+ and the reports from some top sources were worded as "Fox Soccer's venture into the world of HD".
So, I think that at that time, Fox was unsure that FSC-HD could find a place on systems, and that they needed the lure of $$ of a premium channel.
But we do know that all the studio and uplink equipment were in place, because they were used for the HD RSN broadcasts, and can be used for either Fox Soccer channel.
If you look at some of the HD channels added by Dish - such as Fishing HD - you can see that a low per subscriber cost is attractive to Dish.
In other words, these things can change from week to week...
I think that come August, "SD" will largely be for grandmothers and other people with VCRs and car cassette players. Remember that to the electronics industry, "HD" is now past history, and "3D" is the big hype...

Very long shot... The Soup is pillarboxed. The HD shows (e.g., Kendra, the Kardashians, Chelsea Lately) on E! tend to be letterboxed.

i'd wait until it comes on live in HD before getting too excited. i remember watching an Arkansas football game in 2008 on ESPNU that had the ESPNU-HD logo on it, and we still aren't seeing that channel. but hopefully they will be adding all the channels we are wanting here in the upcoming weeks or so.

No guarantees, but I think it is pretty safe to assume that if you get FSC now, and you have the $10 HD package, then you will get FSC-HD.
On March 1st, they launch a new channel with different programming, in HD, called "Fox Soccer Plus" that will be a Premium channel in the same sense as HBO (or Setanta).

I wouldn't mind seeing Fox Soccer Plus as an addition to the Sports Pack instead of it being a stand alone premium, and I thought some press releases even said that operators would have that choice of including it as a sports pack channel or a stand alone network.

I'm really hoping they move it to the sports pack, hell I'd even take it as HD-only in the Platinum tier now that that isn't a separate fee :)
