i recently got directv with hr23 was wanting to take it out to tailgate, but need to know if it can be hooked up to au9 dish and how.

The AU9 dish will work just fine. The newer name for this dish is Slimline. What LNB is on it?

Be warned that aiming that dish can be tricky. The mast needs to be plumb and you then set the tilt, elevation, and azimuth angles based on the dish location.
