On a forum where the most vocal have spoken out against the ipad, go check the poll I ran and you'll see the most popular selection is the ipad.

Sorry...but I laughed when I saw the release of this.

I'd buy a good notebook on sale instead. Much more value and doesn't have the Nazi lockdown on it.

Bob- why do you hope it is a flop? There's a decided difference between having a hunch about the eventual success (or failure) of the iPad and hoping it will be the next Newton.

As the current model missed basic expectations on a few important features and metrics, maybe another marketplace dud will convince Apple to be more thoughtful about what they choose to omit (or make an extra cost option out of) in future products.

The "missed basic expectations" are only a problem if people are using it like they would a laptop - I don't think that will be the case. The people who keep pointing out the iPad's shortcomings remind me of a monkey that sees a telephone pole for the first time, "There aren't enough branches, there's no fruit, there's no bark and it's hard to climb! What good is this tree?" I think the iPad will do well with the people it was targeted at - the rest will just think it's an incomplete laptop.

Just my 2 cents...

Price reduction or much improved features needed at this price. I am going to wait for V2 or maybe V3 (took 3GS for me to finally get an iPhone).

MIke- By the time 3GS came out htc had already produced a superior phone with the touch pro. Unless of course you just had to have that apple. :)

On another note- Apple Board of directors just granted COO Cook a $5M bonus plus 17M in stock with a dual vesting date. In the press release it was divulged that Steve Jobs received a liver transplant and the bonus was for handling things at Apple while Steve was on 6 months medical leave.

A stock trader Sean Udall who claims to have insider connections at Apple said the ipad preorder sales were heavy today.

That is, of course, your opinion. It doesn't represent the opinion of everyone who has compared the devices.

I'm headed to Houston next month. One of my objectives is to drop by the Apple store there and get a hands-on with the iPad. Is it worth $200 more over the equal-memory iPod Touch to get the bigger screen, that's my question.

Regarding an iPad without a G3 radio, I think it makes more sense to get the WiFi-only iPad and use a MiFi device, chosing the best wireless provider for your area instead of being tied to AT&T. If the G3 radio was a user-replaceable module, that would be better, but that isn't Apple's way.

Which people are those? The ones that want to carry around a huge iPod Touch or those that want to carry around a huge iPhone without the phone feature?

Honestly, what is the point of this thing? It is too small and does not do what most laptops do, so it is a crappy computer. It is to big to use as an iPod. It it too big to use as a phone and does not make calls

I don't remember the actual page but I found it by searching on "iPad sales." The numbers were based on the first 2 hours (8:30 to 10:30 ET) of internet sales and didn't include any store figures. Today I've seen estimates of approximately 90,000 internet sales in the first 6 hours plus 41,000 store sales on the first day. Some of the internet sales transactions include more than one iPad but there are no guesses as to what percentage that is. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but those are pretty respectable numbers, especially when you consider that the device won't ship for 3 weeks.

I am not on a mission to jack up anything. I made three separate post because I responded to three different points by three different posters. I know how to multiquote within one post. I hate it when people do that because I like to give each individual the respect and ability to comment to the one post in which I address them. One thing I hate doing is editing other peoples posts because they decided to cover many things and I only want to respond to one.

The estimate is based on a Forbes article (and then picked up by many others) that admittedly is very unscientific
Apple opens the iPad pre-order flood gates, limit two per customer - Story Analysis by BuzzBox (http://www.buzzbox.com/news/2010-03-12/'Hours...':iPad/)

Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) was selling pre-orders for the iPad at a rate of about 25,000 an hour this morning, according to a Forbes piece. The methodology is very unscientific; it’s based on differences between the order numbers given to early buyers
The final tally was more like 74K in 4.5 hours
http://www.businessinsider.com/is-apple-selling-20000-ipads-an-hour-2010-3

Nobody knows whether two or more iPad could be counted as one order and/or any accessories as different orders.
In other words, this number has as much a chance to undercount iPads ordered as it has to be complete BS.

And the longer Apple is mum on the real numbers, the more likely it is the latter...

mperdue, diogen. Thanks, My real interest in this is to predict how the short sellers of Apple stock may react to the sales figures. I'd like to buy more but waiting for the pull back that usually follows a product release.

truckracer- I hope they never do try to emulate a laptop. However, I do agree that multitasking, flash would be nice. Also, I would really like to have a front facing camera for video skype. I will not go for a 3G model as my use will mostly be around the house.

These kinds of stories are a lot like ones that call people idiots for buying a truck instead of a car or deciding to buy anything over anything else. Trucks have been around for over 100 years. Most people that buy a truck over a car know what they are buying, even if they do not plan on using it as a truck.

The difference here is that few people buying this product on the first day had any idea of what exactly it does.

Let me add, why would anyone pay $800 for an oversized iPod Touch when they can spend less money on a PC laptop that can do just about everything this thing can do and much more?

You said it yourself "just about everything" - there are things that the iPad and Android tablets will be much more appropriate for. If you don't see it, that's fine but I'm not going to call you an idiot because you've come to a different conclusion than I have.

As an example, I'm also a photographer. The iPad or other tablet will be much better to have than a laptop when I'm on a shooting assignment. With multiple camera bodies, multiple lenses, tripods, etc. already loading down my camera bag the extra bulk and weight of a laptop doesn't work well. Also, the display on a phone is not big enough to help when showing photos to customers during the shoot. A tablet will be perfect in that application.

There are hundreds of other examples that could be used but it's obvious you've made up your mind so I won't bother you with them.

Mike- I think most of the so called "idiots" carefully reviewed the ipad on the web site, watched the video of Steve's on stage live performance with it and made the choice of quality of construction based on their knowledge of Apple product quality reputation. They know it lacks a camera and Flash and doesn't do multitasking but will be pleased with their ipad purchase just as you are with that clumsy looking Motorola Droid.

Personally, I plan to get a tablet free since I sold and bought back stock on the day of the demo to rake in an $830 profit that's socked away in the bank. Yet, I didn't order because I did say I want to see what else will be coming out and am quite concerned at the usability in the Florida sun. But for my Home theater usage, the ipad fits the bill. No Flash support may make it a bad choice for the kitchen and wife use although she wants one. Bottom line- I'm in no hurry.

Don't forget that many of the early adopters already have an iPhone so they know what to expect from the OS and they know how it operates. These people see uses for the same technology with a larger screen. It's really no different from buying a new PC to replace (or supplement) an old one based only on the specs and photos of the hardware.

Today's reports in the stock publications indicate 152,000 ipads were preordered as of today.
Preorders should wane now until they are in the stores after April 3.
Apple stock lost about 4.00 a share over the news, but other tech stocks, including Google, Dell, HP also lost share value today.
I'd like to see Apple tumble to around $200 a share before climbing to new levels. Right now it's holding around $222

Go read this article and follow the directions on how to add your preorder to the study. (http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2010/03/15/apple-ipad-orders-drop-sharply/)

Tello and Castroll hope to continue their analysis, but they are running out of volunteers willing to submit their order numbers. If you pre-order an iPad between now and April 3 and would like to contribute to their effort, send the information to ipadsales10@gmail.com. meStevo- As I said elsewhere, the preorders are for Apple faithfuls who know already what they will get in quality and Apple ease of use. The ipad may not be designed to make power users happy because the Apple world is so tightly controlled by big daddy Jobs. Many power users like Scott, have the iphone and are happy primarily because they don't care about using jail breaking and will do what they want, be damned with the warranty and Apple control. Average person doesn't do that. But, yes, I expected to see the numbers continue through the weekend and yield about 3 times the current projection.

According to an article in The Street, the estimates being thrown around are low.

Apple iPad Sales Estimates are Wrong | Technology | Financial Articles & Investing News | TheStreet.com (http://www.thestreet.com/story/10703743/1/apple-ipad-sales-estimates-are-wrong.html)

One of the most closely watched Apple iPad sales bloggers Deagol's AAPL Model estimated that first day orders hit 120,000 units but dropped off dramatically to end the weekend with a total of about 152,000 Apple iPads sold.

"That number is low," says an industry analyst who is independently monitoring the iPad sales. The analyst, who is collecting sales data for clients and asked not to be identified, says the current tally is conservative and actual iPad sales are significantly higher. The analyst declined to offer an estimate however.

I've heard from various sources that the 120,000 estimate does not include multiple units on a single order, sales made in store, or internet sales made for in-store pickup. It's going to be very interesting to see where this number finally settles.

I guess that's more like what I was expecting, the 1 or 2 million the analyst suspects. Some compare it to initial iphone sales but it should be blowing it away.

The hangover from the initial over-excitement about the "magical and revolutionary" iPad starts kicking in
Apple Races to Strike Content Deals Ahead of iPad Release - WSJ.com (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703523204575129862264704190.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories)

But lining up TV programming, digital newspapers and other content ahead of the iPad's April 3 release has proven difficult for Apple as some potential collaborators weigh the advantages of working with the company against the potential threats to their current sources of revenue, people familiar with the matter say....Apple has narrowed the device's scope. It has put on hold its idea to offer TV subscriptions that would be viewable through the iPad, because few media companies were interested.

Another interesting quote from there:

Some publishers and TV executives are concerned the iPad doesn't support Adobe Systems Inc.'s Flash video technology, which many publishers use to showcase their multimedia content and is also an underlying technology of online ads.

Maybe someone can arm twist Apple to let flash appear!

Now, after Saint Jobs has spoken, we can get a sense of what iPad sales were all about

Apple said it sold roughly 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available. Some analysts had projected much better results.

Since this includes units shipped to retailer like BestBuy, the real number on people's hands is less (very few reports about sold out inventories).
Subtracting the 152K estimate of preorders, the number of units preordered will be more than half of what was sold.

Bottom line, the number of iPads sold is in the same ballpark as first iPhones. And is mostly indicative of the fanboy base.
Now the question is whether others will see value in this device like they saw in the iPhone...

As I was working out on an elliptical machine this morning at the gym, and watching an episode of Big Bang Theory on my ipod touch, I was thinking, I could see the benefit of an ipad for this - much larger screen; kind of like a portable tv. Then I thought of the $500+ price-tag and I said, nah.... for what I use it for, the ipod touch works fine.

I suspect the tablet world will be very different in a year. And in the meantime, I will wait for better prices, more power, and more freedom than Apple provides.

I saw a guy with one at a local restaurant last night. He was showing it off to everyone... but I just didn't get it. $500 for that? I don't understand it. $500 would buy me a nice little laptop that I can do so much more on.

Maybe if they were priced at $200...just way overpriced.

Wow, taking a page from Sony playing the numbers game, like when they wouldn't say how many PS3s were sold, just how many were shipped...

Given that the iPad isn't tied to a cell carrier (as in you don't have to sign up for a contract to get it) those sales are borderline dismal, 'as good as the iPhone' is just not enough for a 'magical device'.

300K units 'borderline dismal'? Give me a break! The iPhone sold 270K first day as I recall, and touch computers only sold 1M last year in total. I'd say 300K is a great number and any other mfg would be tickled pink to get that from any product.

They probably would have sold more this weekend but most stores and malls were closed on Sunday because of Easter!

I know because I wanted to go and look at them and maybe pick on up nd couldn't do it because everything was closed!

Given that the iPad isn't tied to a cell carrier...I believe this very fact has a silver lining in it:
Apple might not be as determined to plug as soon as possible every jailbreak that gets released...:) Think AppleTV.
And if there is some sort of assurance next Apple update won't brick a jailbroken iPad, its popularity can only increase, I think...

You hold up the iphone as an example of good sales, but remember it was preceded by much more hype and was only available to customers of a single phone carrier.

The iPad was sold at 675 Best Buy stores, the inventory sold TO those stores is included in the 'we sold 300k' figure, not just the number sold to consumers. Your post is the first I've seen of any sell out news (and there were only 15 - 3 of each SKU - at each Best Buy).

Apple 'sold out' online of preorders. This finite number is also included in the 300k. I kinda feel bad for the people that ordered online when they changed it to 'shipping 4/12' since there are iPads sitting on shelves today (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303912104575164222266106354.html?mod=WSJ_business_LeadStoryRotator)

Remember just a week or two ago people were debating about a 100-150k figure for preorders, and now when all is said and done we get less than double that as total orders.

The price is going to have to come down, trying to portray a Wii-like shortage isn't going to work when they can't sell their initial lots. Expect more numbers games when they tack on 3G and those are released.

"While we had expected Best Buy stores to receive only 10-20 iPads per store, it seems many received 100 or more, with the average coming in at around 75 or so for the stores we checked," compared with Apple stores' average of more than 200 or so devices, said Bill Shope, a Credit Suisse information-technology hardware analyst, in a note to clients. "In fact, some of the [Best Buy] stores received a second shipment by late Saturday morning after exhausting their initial supplies."

Our store got 15 by opening and an uncertain small number a little after opening.

675 did. That's not the total number of Best Buy stores, that's the total number that were sent ipads (some sites say 673), out of just over 1000 stores in the US.

Since they're reporting all ipads shipped to BB stores as part of the 300k, this kinda messes up the sales numbers a bit more (not in Apple's favor).

They're a public company, we'll find out how well they did at the end of the quarter.

Even leaving aside the different nature of the two products - iPhone and iPad - it is hard to find a set of comparable numbers.
iPhone sold around 270K over the weekend, iPad - around 300K over 15 hours. Likely less.
But that doesn't include the 3G version that will ship later - and based on some polls that model was half as popular as the WiFi-only one. So, we might have 400K total. Or thereabout.

In the end, "comparable" would be the word to use.
And that I believe reiterates the point that on the first weekend Apple products are bought by people that would buy anything with the coveted logo on it (sans journos, reviewers and few other groups). Half-year sales would be more representative of the success of a new product...

Well the WSJ said 300k sold not 300k shipped. It is not clear that they are counting all those shipped to BB as part of the 300k.

AppleŽ today announced that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the US as of midnight Saturday, April 3. These sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the big deal is with these numbers. All bestbuy stores on this side of town all have Apple owned spaces, even the one that is next door to the Apple store!

So, if the goal here is to diminish the number sold, and you average the deliveries to "channel partners" as a number not sold at all the Apple stores delivered 235,000 on Saturday. Now add back roughly 30% of the shipments delivered as a conservative estimate and we could say that 250,000 were activated by buying customers. All stores here were closed on Sunday due to Easter holiday.
I wanted to see how the Apple store was doing so I stopped by at 2PM and it was at capacity and I had to wait to enter the store with dozens waiting outside. While I waited a dozen or so people walked out with their iPad and smiles. It really was fascinating to watch. The Bestbuy store nearby had sold out on Saturday and just a few people were playing with the demos.

There is no big deal with the numbers and no one is trying to diminish them...
The goal is to find numbers not soaked in hype, new-speak, and other "awesomeness"...

This thread started with claims 25K order per hour and ended with 250K sold all inclusive.
And analyst predictions ranging from 1 to 7 million devices sold by year end.

Quite a bit of a difference, isn't it?

Why? What is the motivation?

Are you trying to predict stock jumps to muster some quick cash? If you already own a nice chunk of stock, I wouldn't worry so much as it is what it is and Apple doesn't seem to be suffering too much in that area right now.
