I have dish. My mother has direct due to trees and can't get dish.
When she signed up, she got a hd receiver. Since configuring her vcr is to complicated, she's been talked into getting a dvr.
I Called direct cs to see if she could swap out her HDReceiver. Here is the conversations in a nutshell:
CSa: She could get a hddvr for $99 with a 2 year agreement. + $30 delivery +$7 DVR fee+free install. (would have to run a second line and switch)
She doesn't have hd service, but getting hd locals and would need a hddvr to continue getting the locals in hd.
Me: But my mom doesn't have to pay for the hd service, but can continue to receive her locals in hd?
csa: Yes.
Me:Ok. I have to call and run this by her and I will call back. Is their confirmation number I need to have?
CSa: No, I'll just place the notes on her account.
Called back within 10 minutes: (eventually went to the floor supervisor)
CSb: No HDDVR for $99. It's $199.
Me: But I made a point to mention the HDDVR. Check the recording.
CSc: No. Only standard is $99 HDDVR is $199.
Me: Gave a lecture on customer service. Explained that I was a Dish Network customer and I have been convinced to remain a Dish Network customer after this and I will do everything possible to get my mom switched over to Dish.
CS FLOOR SUPERVISOR: Sorry you feel that way. Good By.
You would think that once they heard I was with Dish, they would have wanted to win me over? Nah. In fact they started to get an attitude with me.
Sorry direct, Dish beats you by a long shot for customer service.

Sorry direct, Dish beats you by a long shot for customer service.
Maybe you misunderstood what the first CSR said? The HDDVR's from Directv have always been $199 with a 2 year contract. Most of us have paid that unless it is a new customer account then there are promos out there that can make it cheaper.
Dish Network charges for their receivers too. And in my experience Dish's customer service is the worst.
Why didn't you just call back and ask for the first CSR's operator number? You are right, I would get an attitude too if you were lecturing me about customer service.

What he said, as 14 year subscriber, I too paid $199.00 without threatening to go to (insert co. here)
The D* CSR's don't need to chase Dish subs, There's enough leaving on their own.

HD DVRs are $199.00. IF you get a deal, then you need to take it at that time. You got lucky and got a deal but since you didn't accept it at that time that is your loss.

Saying that Dish beats D* in customer service is funny. They both can really suck at times, and Dish just finally got their head outta their *** and fixed some of their CS issues.
Useless thread.

Except for D* screwing me on a contract, I never had a bad deal with them. Their website allows you to do so much with your account and I love it. A few years back, every time you called Dish it was someone in India you could not understand, and it felt like the Dollar Tree of the Sat business. While I still get a more "professional" feel from most things D* does, Dish has really gotten better. You can get almost anything done with their online chat now, but I still like D*'s site better.

They are not talking about customer service issues, they are talking about complaints filed against them by other companies, such as the stupid future satellite company trying to prevent them from moving D12 to 103.
I still have to question your source and how they came to the subjective grade that they did, especially when every other ratings system (such as jd power) rates Direct even higher. With the lawsuits against Dish and the ruling in cases like TiVo, they don't think Dish has "fraudulent business practices"?

Complainants generally allege problems relating to contract terms, billing disputes, descrepencies concerning pre-paid programming. Many of the complaints relate that the company's promotional offers fail to include all of the limitations, conditions and penalties that may apply. In almost all cases, the advertised promotional pricing is dependent on conditions that are not readily apparent from the advertising. Complainants consider the advertising to be deceptive. Some complain the company fails to send statements in a timely fashion resulting in late fees, or that unauthorized amounts of money are charged or debited to customer accounts. Others complain of inadequate customer service and the inability to contact the company to change programming or resolve billing issues. The company responds to most complaints by relying on the terms of the contract. In some cases, they apply necessary credits, adjust programming, or otherwise resolve the problems. In many cases, the company disputes the complainants allegations, and refuses adjustments.

Why I will remain with Dish...
More National HD Channels
Cost less the Direct, and thats with Two HD DVR's and a third SD
Its about a 20 dollars a month savings to get the channes I want if I switiched to Dish
They have NHL, NFL and NBA Network, while it would be nice to have MLB EI, I can live with ESPN, TBS and RSN coverage of Baseball
But thats why its great to have choices, so each person can get what they need for each provider
Interesting, because Direct is about $0.50 cheaper for me with 2 HD DVRs.

This has been my DTV experience as well. I've never had Dish so I can't compare, but all of my CSR phone conversations with DTV have been good. I can clearly understand them in good English and I always ask, out of curiousity, where the CSR is located. Unless they're not being truthful, they've all been in the continental U.S. Their accents and clear articulation seems to bear that out as well.
That said, when I call a CSR, I'm not expecting them to answer certain specific questions, since I can get those answers faster and accurately at this site :D

They gave me lip first, so I gave them lip back. I was a CSR for a time awhile ago and I know how to treat customers. Did they once offer to check with the original CSR that gave me the deal and quoted me the HDDVR for $99 + 19.95 delivery? Nope. They told me I misunderstood that it was a HDDVR, disregarding the fact that I asked the first rep at least 3 times that it indeed was a HDDVR. That's was the whole purpose I called in, to see if I could get a better deal for a HDDVR. Why would I have agreed to pay $20 for delivery on a standard dvr, when I can get it with free shipping on line?
I'm sure most of the times both D* and E* provide great service. I just know that whenever I had an issue with E*, I always came away a satisfactory resolution. With D* I didn't. (fyi...I'm a E* customer, my parent is a D* customer due to tree issues and can't get E* - I was elected to get the parent a dvr to eliminate how to set and watch the vcr questions.

Me: But my mom doesn't have to pay for the hd service, but can continue to receive her locals in hd?
csa: Yes.
Here's the deal:
Your mother lives in an Mpeg-4 market, which means that the local channels are uplinked to DTV sats in HD per contracts with local channel providers. This means that you need HD equipment, NOT HD SERVICE (for $10/mo), to get you locals. IF she doesn't pay for HD service then her locals are not in HD.
$99 for a HDDVR that is FAR superior to anything Dish currently has is a great deal, not to mention I can tell you many people get them for free, try not being whiny...
Sorry direct, Dish beats you by a long shot for customer service.
C.S. from both companies CAN be horrible, you seem to have talked to some morons at DTV, it happens. Trust me I have dealt with both companies extensively, overall DTV has better C.S. in my experiences.
I own a VIP 722 and a HR23-700, 3 years ago the VIP 722 was the best, now the DTV HDDVRs are light years ahead and dish is playing catchup.
