View Full Version : Will Voom Show a real DVR tomorrow at CES 2005? Yes!

Ok, non-believers this your chance to have your own magic 8 ball. It looks like everyone has one about VOOM, anyway :D. So do you want to bet on this one?

Sure, I'll be glad to take you up on this one. ;)

I'll wager a dozen doughnuts that they'll be showing the DVR. You can pick the flavor.

Does the "real deal" mean an actual production model and not a prototype or one-of-a-kind device? I would think if they are going to have the DVR released within 5 months then they should already be working with the actual hardware and should be involved in the testing and finalizing the firmware. My answer is no - they will not have the production DVR at CES.

I predict the DVR will report for duty. I am also expecting a DVR Promotion starting in March.

I voted yes because if they don't, someone should be fired. They've rebuilt the space shuttles in less time...

My wife sat me down last night and asked why we still have both voOm and cable. We watch network TV and use the DVR 80% of the time(she made a spreadsheet, i kid you not).
I have hung on until now believing they were moving forward.
However this is the deal maker for me, if there is not a fully functional model then I will need to walk away from Voom until they are in the market and a proven winner.

I sure hope they show a working DVR, but I'll take a wait-and-see position. I'm trying out the local cable company's HD DVR, and I'm hooked already even though they don't have many HD channels compared to Voom (still more than D* and E* though).

I voted no. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they gave the same vaporware presentation they have given the last two times out. Scott can just repost his video of it from before.

Cable's Dual Tuner DVRs are stealing VOOM's dwindling customer base.

VOOM surprise me!

Sean Mota
01-04-2005, 07:26 PM
The answer is YES. The DVR complete solution will be there as some of you already have posted a press release and some already have some insight information. The box was built by motorola and its model # is the 580; it will have OPENTV software and Ucentric (DVR software) plus NDS. The whole network solution will be presented. What to look for? Everything.... Speculate now how long before it gets out but this is it. This is the production box that will be rolled out. I hope Scott takes a lot of pictures and video. I wonder why OPENTV??? ;)

I can't wait for the news and reviews. I really wish I could have attending...damn this job! Perhaps we'll see live/taped coverage of CES2005 on HDN? The Camera Crew should still be in Vegas after covering the New Years festivities.

BTW, I would sure like to see a 10-15 minutes DVR preview on INVOOM (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) in the very near future.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I really hate CES. They show you all these nice cool gadgets, and they never seem to have them available anytime soon. It seems this stuff never hits the streets for at least a year if at all.

Hasn't Voom been showing off this DVR for sometime? Yet it still is not available. What I really want to know is WHEN!?! D%^#&T

Ilya

This is Huge news. You should post over at AVS.

Tired of posting at AVS and getting the same negative answers. I'd bet you that if this is posted someone would post a "but". Tired of getting into non-sensical debates of people that have no knowledge or have a special interest. So I am staying away from posting at AVS because it leads to nothing. As I said before, there's a lot of stuff we the staff know but cannot post and only will post when the information is about to go public. We knew about the DVR since early October 2004. Yes, we never had seen one but we knew that it was worked on. We knew some of it not all. We tried to leave you pieces of information here and there as clues since we knew that it was more than a unix pc.

The bottom line is that there is more where this came from and because we tried to respect insight information by not going public we sometimes need to stay away from a lot of misinformation posted here and not tried to dispute it. I can tell you right now that based on the information that we know VOOM is not going down (at least not easily). Not that we know it all but based on what we know, there is a long way to go before we all see the end of VOOM. I do not deny that I and others could have been given wrong information but that's hard to do when more than one source it's involved. There's a lot of stuff coming but ONLY time will tell. The naysayers may have their day, but it won't be in the near future.

From reading the press release posted today on AVS I see no mention of a HD DVR in Voom's announced growth plans. So does this mean the DVR displayed in their CES booth is nothing more than a concept mock-up with no functional use other than set dressing? I posted this earlier on this thread and I believe someone deleted the post. So let's see if I get censored once again.

Does it mean that HD-TiVo will be useless when D* migrate to Mpeg4? Wow, poor people who pay 1000 grants for it. I guess D* will give them the option of a new (Ucentric?) MPEG4 DVR upgrade for another 1000 grants. LOL

It means TIVO as a company is done! If you have anything invested on Tivo, now is the time to sell it. It looks like D* is saying its final farewell to Tivo. Sorry for those that invested on a $1K Tivo and $1K 921. One learns the hard way, the only way to get these DVRs (no matter what company it is) is to lease since technology changes by the minute.

P.S. this is just an opinion.

Yes I totally agree on the lease scheme. It's a stupid idea to invest in company-tied and technology at release equipment unless you'll be able to sell it.

The release on the 942 showed no indication of a lease program, just $749. So they aren't ready to lease that expensive hardware yet.

Hopefully Voom will pull through with a lease of their DVR.

And haha to the D* people that thought E* was alone with a encoding upgrade and killing old boxes. Basically every company will be upgrading to new formats in the year ahead.

It was a joke, don't start taking me too serious, I said for a while now that as soon as Voom gets a DVR out and my RSN I would give them another try, and even through I have E* , I have learned to believe nothing they say or put out in a press release.

Please - no replies about what you "heard" it can do - only facts please.

Warning just speculation: but I wonder is this has anything to do with the canceled press conference. I personally don’t put a lot of faith in CBS’s reporting, and it is touted as specuialtion, but I don’t remember seeing anything even this close to ‘firm’ before.

"Also, speaking of EchoStar, Eagan is convinced that the company, led by its mercurial chairman, Charlie Ergen, will buy Cablevision's Voom satellite for between $125 million and $175 million.

Cablevision (CVC: news, chart, profile) said last month that its planned spinoff of Rainbow Media Enterprises - which includes Voom, cable networks AMC, Women's Entertainment and the Independent Film Channel; and the company's Clearview Cinemas unit -- has been postponed for the third time this year.

The reality may be, said Eagan, that Cablevision has decided to sell the satellite, and Voom's current orbital slot complements EchoStar's existing orbital locations."

A quick update from Scott: VOOM has the "580" DVRs at the booth but for some reason not on display. All demonstrations are run from the real 580 DVRs, even though the 550 STBs are displayed. They seem to be operational, though the software is not fully ready yet. The release is expected in March, according to what he was told. Scott took some pictures and taped a demonstration, but it will be at least another couple of hours before he will get a chance to post his reports here.

Update: As later reported by Scott and others, the VOOM DVR was shown on display during the CES-2005. Scott must have missed it somehow on the first day...

This will be the only way Voom will be able to jump ahead of the competition. When first mentioning the DVR and whole home network they mentioned the originator of the technology. That was a year ago. If they don't release both the DVR and whole house networking by march or sooner they will be a failure.
