Barcelona v Real Sociedad (Camp Nou): Preview Source (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/preview?id=169977&cc=5901)

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol is confident his side can show against Real Sociedad on Sunday that last week's defeat by Villarreal was nothing more than a minor slip.

The Catalan club saw their 10-point lead at the top of the Primera Liga cut to seven as an inspired performance from Juan Roman Riquelme led Villarreal to a 3-0 victory.

Ronaldinho, so often the protagonist for Barca and especially when they are struggling in a game, was largely anonymous against Villarreal, but the club have said he will play against Sociedad.

However, Deco will be missing through suspension and his position in the team will go to youngster Andres Iniesta.

Midfielder Xavi Hernandez admitted the absence of the Portuguese star is a blow to Barca, but he is optimistic they can pick up three points.

Sociedad too have had a bad start to the new year, losing 2-0 at home to Albacete last weekend and 2-1 in the re-arranged game against Real Madrid.

They are currently lying 13th in the table with 22 points from 18 games and have only two wins away from the Anoeta Stadium.

Their task will not be helped if leading scorer Kahveci Nihat, who is a doubt for Sunday's game with a stomach complaint, has to pull out.

Real Madrid v Real Zaragoza (Santiago Bernabeu): Preview

Entire Article (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/preview?id=169984&cc=5901)

Raul has a muscle problem in his left leg, while Ronaldo is struggling with his left calf.

Fellow forward Fernando Morientes completed his transfer to Liverpool on Thursday, which could open the door for Michael Owen to start another league game despite his quiet performance in Madrid's 0-0 draw in Thursday's Copa del Rey game in Valladolid.

Madrid, currently seven points behind league leaders Barcelona, will go into the game with the advantage of knowing the result of Barca's game against Real Sociedad, which will be played earlier in the day.

Whatever the outcome of Barca's match, Madrid will still be playing catch-up, although they could be in the position to close the gap to just four points.

Transfer rumours Source (http://www.soccer-spain.com/)

As expected, Real Madrid were active in the winter transfer market this week for the first time in several seasons, the unsettled Morientes making his move to Liverpool and Portillo being recalled from his loan at Fiorentina to replace him. And only hours afterwards they finally agreed terms with the man the Spanish press are calling "the Ogre" or "Shrek", Everton's Thomas Gravesen, who is expected to give them the fighting spirit they have been lacking in midfield since Makelele left. Their number one rivals Barcelona have still not made their move though, with their latest target Iaquinta proving a difficult fish to land as Udinese upped the asking price to €12 million. John Carew is still an alternative though for the striker's spot, and there is talk once again of Edgar Davids returning as the other options for a defensive midfielder fall through.

For those with Gol TV http://www.goltv.tv/indexbuilder.php?target=programacion#

Tomorrow:

We need GolTV on VOOM.I agree! Hope it looks better than Fox Sports World, though! It hurts watching soccer in SD, especially converted from PAL to NTSC...

Good afternoon everyone. Missed La Liga Report but made it on time for the game... A must win for Barca if they want to keep a good distance. Valencia and Osasuna game ended up in a tie 0-0 this morning.

Hola todos! Am watching the game. I totally agree about GolTV and about it looking better than FoxSportsWorld (I hope). Maybe they will both be in HD sometime soon. And VOOM DOES NEED GolTV, I don't have it, but it looks awesome.

There's something wrong with the cameras. There are either out of focus or there is a lot of fog or smoke in the entire stadium. It does not look sharp at all like previous matches. Is it fog?

Sean Mota
01-16-2005, 01:07 PM
how 'bout that missed it :)

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:08 PM
Missed penalty kick by Eto'o.

Ilya
01-16-2005, 01:08 PM
I think it's fog.

timfouts
01-16-2005, 01:10 PM
At least we have a referee that has courage. Looks like there's some smoke in there.

Sean Mota
01-16-2005, 01:10 PM
Yeah... It looks like fog. The camera on the ground field when focused on a player you can clearly see the fog in the background; It looks like fog and HD signal are not good for each other.

Ilya
01-16-2005, 01:13 PM
...Maybe they will both be in HD sometime soon. I doubt. :( Not until Europe goes HD, which is not going to be soon.
It's actually a miracle that we are watching HD broadcasts from Spain on VOOM!

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:17 PM
Point taken, Ilya. About the smoke or fog, it also has a sort of interference patterned look in the background of the field-side cameras. Disturbing to say the least. I wish the announcers would comment on it for those of us sensitive to these things...

I just checked www.weather.com for Barcelona. 54 F and Hazy. You can look at the weather map and see all the clouds and hazy conditions over it.

http://www.weather.com/weather/map/SPXX0015?name=index_large_animated&day=1

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:26 PM
That's possible, but the field-side camera down at the Real Sociedad goalie's end is showing a muddier picture than the one at field-side at midfield. Noticeably so. It could simply be that the one shooting downfield has a much deeper background image than the one at midfield. From a director's point of view, I would imagine they will try to minimize the use of that camera down by Riesgo's end as a result.

Ilya
01-16-2005, 01:31 PM
A lot of shots on goal! Pretty aggressive game so far.

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:32 PM
Anyone know how many HD cameras they've got? I'm guessing 4 or 5 in total...2 on the pitch, 1 up high and midfield, and another 1 or 2 at a middle altitude off the pitch.

timfouts
01-16-2005, 01:35 PM
There's at least seven cameras

timfouts
01-16-2005, 01:37 PM
To me this game seems to be dead. Need a goal to liven it up.

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:38 PM
Yeah, I can see there's more than what I thought now, but the one down at Riesgo's end ON the pitch has a problem that the others don't have, do you see it? The director seems to be trying to avoid using that camera too much. The other two cameras ON the pitch aren't showing the same type of problem. It looks like a mild interference pattern with that camera. I could be wrong though.

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:39 PM
Don't worry, someone will score, but it might be in the second half. Similar game to last year's Real Sociedad visit to Camp Nou so far, imo.

timfouts
01-16-2005, 01:43 PM
The camera could be out of registration but they can fix that in 30 seconds. On second thought the cameras are digital not analog. Must be a pixel problem.

Sean Mota
01-16-2005, 01:44 PM
Last year when I was at the control room in Rainbow HQ, there were six cameras in game at the stadium. Here's the post when I was at the control room (http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=15063)

01-16-2005, 01:51 PM
Sean, thanks for that thread link, cool...

davekendra
01-16-2005, 01:56 PM
If there are 6 cameras, my guess is 3 on the pitch (2 at each end, 1 at midfield), 2 at mid-range altitude and one up high... sort of a pyramidic layout.

01-16-2005, 01:56 PM
I want goals in the second half though... :)

Good morning/afternoon all - I just showed up and saw only the last few minutes of the first half. It was not a very interesting end to the first half except Ronaldinho's neat attempt to chip the ball forward into the goal box near the end of regulation.

Hope to see a great second half.

Oh and I'd love to see GolTV on VOOM - caught part of a game on it while I was up in Vancouver BC last weekend.

How many points will Real be behind should this game remain 0-0 and Real wins?

timfouts

I think 4

Ilya
01-16-2005, 02:34 PM
Yes, 4! Let's see... They are 6 points behind now. A win gives them 3 points and Barca would get just one for the draw. So, the difference would be reduced by 2...

Agreed about this game with Deco playing... still Barca came very close to tying or losing this game. Victor Valdez's stock has risen with me based on this game and the Getafe game earlier this season. Eto'o's header off that corner was AWESOME, that necked roll and the power on the header in the same touch was sheer lunacy! Valdez deserves player of the game for me though. Have fun those going to watch Real Madrid vs. Zaragoza.

Sean, please pass on info to Matt at WorldSport about that one camera that was extra-pixelly or grainy, if possible. I'd really hate to see that again. It was the one located on the far left of the pitch on the field. Any explanation about what what going on with it would be appreciated and hopefully the problem will be overcome ASAP. Thanks.

I'm getting nervous with Barcelona not making any signings yet. They need at least a couple players. There has been talk lately about Davids coming back. I wouldn't say no to that.

Madrid has been extremely lucky in the past 3 weeks. First scoring a goal in five minutes against R. Sociedad, and then getting their ass kicked against Atleti but coming away with 3 points. Worrying.
