View Full Version : So... How's It Running?
Scott Greczkowski

As you know we just invested a lot of money into the future of SatelliteGuys with a brand new server. With the exception of some small issues the move went very well, and I am happy to report that all of those bugs are fixed.
Not only did we move servers but we also moved ISPs from an ISP in Dallas to an ISP in Michigan.
So now that everything is working I would like your feedback on how things are running....
Thanks for your feedback and support!

I still think there are issues:
Still have the Avatar refresh issue on all of my computers (Must refresh the page in order to get my Avatar to appear after making a post)
The annoying pop-up asking if I am sure I want to leave the page comes up on occasion when I exit one thread to go to another. This message pops up even if I do not enter anything or post anything (just viewing a thread). This never happened prior to the switch
Not an issue, but I prefer the way the old smiley image posted prior to the switch. The smiley windowed stayed opened so you can add as many as you wanted. Now it automatically closes after you click on a smiley you want to add and you have to open the window again in order to post another one

Still getting strange thread icons on the search results page. They are either blanks or up/down arrows on unread threads. After the thread is read, they become normal. See attached

The text in your quick reply is because you hit the "reply with quote" button.
I would suggest you clean your browser cache/temp files & cookies related to SG, then restart your browser and log back in.

Thats because someone i wont name added a hack suggested by another member here, then removed it, now the CDN has the old images cache'd, which no longer exists on the server, because the sprite hack is now uninstalled.

1. If you want to use the old attachment manager gui, then change it in your usercp settings.
2. Spell check works the same for me regardless of the new editor vb decided to go with, as its controlled from your browser, not the editor.
3. As far as fonts go, you can also override that in your browser, if you dont like what the forum uses.

I don't mind the editor, I've noticed salsadancer7's avatar broken from multiple computers since the switch though. Also Tapatalk is not recognizing threads that I had previously participated in, I had to make a test post in the Revue Review sticky thread for it to remember I've posted in it before. That was the only obvious one.
Tapatalk continues to be behind the functionality offered on other forums as well, on Operationsports I am able to thank (like) posts from the app, and can't here.

In the picture I have two things circled in red. Spell Check and the paper clip for attacments. They no longer work, at least for me. As far as what I copy and paste it has changed but even though I do not like it, I can live with it. To me me this update to vBulletin acts and looks like something in beta testing. I have gone into my user cp and tried different setting, I will try again later. For a user like me, these updates to vBulletin should not be this difficult or radical.
I realize I am only one voice, but am sure other folks will not like this mess either. Like I said before, I know it is not yours or Scott's fault, but this new editor stinks in my opinion.;)

As i posted previously, change the attachment manager gui in your usercp.
Also, that spell check is not part of vbulletin, its a addon for vb 3.5, it shouldnt even be used on this version of vbulletin actually.

Just for the heck of it,
DK do you use an Add Blocker, if so try disabling it. Just a thought.
meStevo
09-28-2011, 11:32 AM
Ad Blocker likely wouldn't show a broken image like his screenshot shows, but instead a blank spot. My ad blocker hides over a dozen images/flash advertisements on every single page (17 viewing this page of thread) and they're just gone, not broken.
I don't have any problems seeing DK's avatar however: http://vb4.satguys.us/customavatars/avatar94630_16.gif
I (http://vb4.satguys.us/customavatars/avatar94630_16.gif) doubt he'd have the same ad blocker on "Work server, home server, 4 different desktops, and 2 different laptops" and in multiple browsers anyways.

Blocking the logo, all the gold sponsors, the inline google ads, the flash ads inline with each post and at the top and bottom of the page. Only non-ad it's blocking is the site logo.
It's a much, much cleaner experience. Could probably block a few more unnecessary things like the stars and trophies and a couple of the regions in the footer.

I've seen it now too and can somewhat reproduce one form of it. Clicking back before the page has completed loading can cause this error to pop up as if you've entered something into the quick reply. Staying on the page shows there's nothing there.
Once it happens, I can click stay on this page, and clicking back it will happen a couple more times. Something on the page finally finishes loading and I can click back without a problem.
The script that detects stuff entered probably loads before the content box of the WYSIWYG, hitting back before the entire editor loads causes the problem IMO.
As for the OP, using Chrome and ad blockers the site was already very very fast, I notice little/no difference.

It seems that since the server upgrade, I've been having a login issue. Usually when I want to go to on here, I type in the address without the "www" and I can get on here and login just fine. But now, I can't login when I do that. I can still get on to the main page, but I try to login, I get this message:
vBulletin Message Invalid Redirect URL (http://satelliteguys.us/)
So I guess when I have to login on here, I actually have to type in the "www" part now. Not a huge deal as I have the website bookmarked on my laptop, but when I have to use another computer, it can get a little annoying.

Forcing me to login again is probably related to closing my MacBook, which disconnects from the Internet.
This did not happen before--it would accept me again after having closed it all day.
This means it is harder to pick up where you left off unless you login in a different window.
Please go back to the easy-on.

I wonder if pages are being re-served faster than Varnish can cache them if you're using it (saw it mentioned when the site was down the other day in an error message). More likely just vBulletin + browser cache though, or some combination of all of the above.

So the new server is called clarke.satelliteguys.us, but why does it go the "The List" site when you to in a browser. Also when I do a traceroute, it comes throught as mail.satelliteguys.us.
Scott Greczkowski
09-30-2011, 05:56 AM
Josh a server can host many sites on it. When you create a new server it is normal to give the first IP a host name, we did that and the name is clarke.satelliteguys.us which is the servers name. That host name does not have anything to do with any of the sites running on that server but is its main name for the server itself going forward.
