So I set the voom box on 720? Thanks, will this also help with the standard stations? Also the tv has a noise filter setting will this help with the slightly fuzzy standard stations?

Yes, Sony has a non-standard resolution of 788p.

I feed VOOM's unchanged 1080i and let the TV set do the conversion.

Switch to a satellite channel (e.g. 100) and then press HELP-INFO-OK
Then press DOWN 2-3 times until you see the signal readings.

Again, per the specs the set accepts 480i/480p/720p/1080i, so for HD I would try both 720p and 1080i and leave it at whatever looks best (i.e. find out if the stb or the Sony has the better scaler).
