From Paul Giblin:

At last it's the big one again: Barca - Real Madrid. This Saturday in the Camp Nou, 3:00pm ET, 10pm local time.

Remember last November? How Ronaldinho did the almost impossible and got an ovation from the Santiago Bernabeu? How Eto'o tore the heart out of a weakened Real Madrid side? And how Leo Messi spectacularly came of age???

Well now it's round two and a lot has changed since that day: Most importantly Barca have the league all but sewn up - they have an 11 point lead and even if Madrid should win... and they've only done that once in the league (in the Camp Nou) in the last 20 years, the title would still be heading for Cataluna.

So that leaves pride... as we saw against Deportivo, Madrid still have some of that. Also Ronaldo looks to be getting back to his best (odd that with the World Cup around the corner).

Also and very importantly Barca are without 3 key players: there will be no Messi, Marquez or Edmilson and add to that the possible tiredness of a Champions League quarter final on Tuesday and the second leg the week after, and it is not as clear cut as it could be.

What it will certainly be though is 90 minutes of some of the best sporting theatre there is in the World. 98,000 fans, a pressure cooker atmosphere, tension and controversy guaranteed...

Don't tell me you are going to be out shopping or cutting the lawn. You HAVE to watch it.

Until then cheers,

PAUL

(PS still happy because Athletic Bilbao won again)

FC Barcelona have played hosts to Real Madrid 75 times in the league, giving rise to a huge number of statistics and fascinating facts. Here are just some of them.

Between the Les Corts and Nou Camp stadiums, Barca have hosted 75 league matches against Real Madrid. What is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited match of the season has left behind a treasure trove pf facts. Her are some of the most interesting:

-Of the 75 matches, Barca have won 44, drawn 14 and lost 17.

-Ronaldinho has scored more goals against Real Madrid than any other member of the current Barca squad, with 4 goals in the last 3 games. He's closely followed by Eto'o, who has scored 3.

-Every time Real Madrid have come to the Nou Camp in second place in the table and with Barca in first place (7 times) Barca have won the match and scored more than 3 goals.

Tonight's match referee is Luis Medina Cantalejo from the Andalus College of Referees. The two sides have experienced varying fortunes when he has been in charge. Of the 6 games lost by FC Barcelona this season, 2 (against Atlético Madrid in the league and Zaragoza in the Cup) were officiated by Mr Medina. Real Madrid, on the other hand, have not lost a match officiated by Mr Medina since the 2002-03 season.

Also, I noticed that I no longer see a list of member currently viewing this (or any other) thread on the status bar (Thread Tools, Search This Thread, Display Modes)...did something recently change? I haven't changed any of my settings/options.

I hope RM wins to make it more interesting, though I wouldn't bet on this. I think Barca has a better chance. We'll see though...

This is a result of the latest server fine-tuning. Scott discovered that this dramatically improves performance. :)
Though I agree, it was nice to see who is in each thread...

Not sure if this has been discussed. Is it just me, or is the score in the upper left corner cut off? Can't see the "B" or "R". I've noticed this before, but never gave it much thought.

It depends on how your monitor is set up.

It's been mentioned before, I think the score is way to the left and it doesn't show completely in most monitors.

My 411 is mpeg 4 but I want the 622 for the DVR. I have to get a super dish to get my locals to show up in the program guide so I have to do the $299 no rebate and then they will give me the dish upgrade for 50 bucks. If I don't do the superdish then I cannot preprogram the DVR to record automatically.

Not too many goals, but the game was very entertaining! I wish Real Madrid showed more action, but I think they should be happy with the final score.

For those of you with new receivers, enjoy the game next week! ;)

P.S. I still do not understand why Dish Network is making it so ridiculously difficult to upgrade! Why not just enable WorldSport and other channels for those who have already subscribed?!! Why do we have to wait for new receivers? Oh well! See you guys in three weeks!

I had some previous commitment and could not watch the game LIVE but I've got to see it from DVR. Excellent game with lots of intensity. Barcelona dominated the entire game and had so many opportunities to score. Yet, we can't forget that RM was playing with one man less and defended well. Also, how about the defensive save of castilla. The only goal that Barca scored Castilla was kicking himself because he thought he could get to it some how. Any way great game.

there's an article on espn soccernet about the "dive" that Van Bommel took is apparently causing quite a stir in Spain. Unfortunately we never got a good replay on Rush/Worldsport. I'd like to see the replay...

Anyway, still a great game, if Roberto Carlos just keeps quiet and only gets the one yellow then the game may have been different....

Ilya

From Paul:

Who was that referee???

I called the penalty in the Camp Nou, Sid called it, everyone we talked to called it and then a replay from behind the goal (which sadly we didn't have) showed Van Bommel took a dive when Roberto Carlos slid in.

So Madrid have due cause for complaint, although Roberto Carlos then got himself sent off for overuse of his mouth, which was stupid.

Barca, if they are honest will be pleased with the result of the classico, even though they will feel they created more than enough chances to have won easily. The draw keeps them 11 points clear at the top and with 7 games left, the title is that bit closer.

Madrid should also be reasonably pleased, although the papers have enjoyed a good old cry about the ref, who probably did favour Barca more. It is a point gained for them and they remain second in the table, even though Valencia bounced back to form.

Lopez Caro's men now have to beat Real Sociedad, who are 3rd from bottom, next Saturday in our game of the week. Real Sociedad can't afford to lose. However, their defense is dreadful and all of a sudden Ronaldo is getting back to his best.

Will Madrid keep up the tension? Can Real Sociedad escape the drop zone? All will be revealed...

The only thing certain is that with Basque separatist group 'ETA' calling a ceasefire there will be no repeat of the bomb scare that saw my co-commentator Mr. Lowe racing for the exit 3 minutes from time last year.

Thank heaven for small mercies.

See you there. PAUL
