View Full Version : How important is HGTV?

I've seen some post on this and other forums that read something like:

"My wife won't let me get VOOM until they get HGTV :( "

"I got VOOM but I've been telling my wife HGTV will be coming soon.." (to gain some time and hoping it actually happens) ;) .

"I had to keep cable (D* or E*) just because my wife wanted HGTV  "

I'm personally in the 2nd boat. :D

Where are you???

HG is great, but HD is better....I'll wait.

Never been married/emasculated. You guys need to show her who's the boss. I would watch MOOV before HOME & GARDEN TELEVISION. Home and Garden? Really? People allow this to become a deal breaker? Amazing.

My wife and I used to watch several shows on HGTV but they got old and we got tired of them. We probably wouldn't mind if VOOM got the channel. It seems the shows were always more fun to watch this time of year when we're trying to do some home improvement ourselves. But we wouldn't cry about it if VOOM never got the channel.

Maybe that should've been a 5th option to vote. Something like:

"I got rid of wife to get VOOM" :haha

Can I change my vote to #5 :D I'm so glad my wife doesn't read this forum ! :smug

Completely agree with you. There are good and bad things about this channel for whipped men:

Good: it keeps your wife's attention for hours freeing you to other things (like web surfing, reading, etc.) :D

Bad: it gives ideas to women on home improvement projects that later you have to work on

HGTV is a cool channel. It is not just gardening, it is home improvement. You ought to see how cool some of the things they do are. In fact they have one show in which 3 interior designers come up with plans to redo a room based on your input. You pick the plan you like the best and they take care of it for you (your money though). How about an Extremely Professional Home Theater room anybody? As far as the rest of the programming - it has nothing to do with being whipped. It has to do with being creative. If you want to make your house look nice here are some cool ideas.

Monster House rocks. I still want the kitchen from the very first episode. Between Discovery and TLC we don't really need HGTV but yeah it does have some cool shows and it's nice to have the options when we start to get bored with a certain show. I tried watching Ultra Space a few times on one of the VOOM channels but it never really caught my attention.

I'd take VH1 classics over HGTV!! Or Sci-Fi, or ESPN, or Discovery Times! But in that catagory I like DIY best.

I'll bet the guys who watch this channel with their wives also go shopping at Nordstrom with her and hold her purse for her while she goes and tries on some new outfits.

Yeah, which makes me even more appreciative of my (second) wife. Conversations with her go like this:

"Honey, I'm buying a $2500 TV" "OK"
"Sugar, we are going to have 2 satellite services" "Cool"
"Hon, I'm buying a new truck" "Go for it"
"Babe, I bought a boat" "Alright!"

Versus my first wife who just wanted my paycheck and was bipolar, lol.

HGTV is an important channel in our household and I have to maintain a basic subscription to Dish for just this one channel.

Once HGTV comes to Voom, I will cancel my dish subscription completely.

And watching this channel has nothing to do with being pwhipped. Different strokes, folks.

I would like to see TechTV, USA, SCI-FI, and PPV movies. I know sports people would like to see more sports channels. Who cares about Home and Garden?

I agree with you on one thing: this channel is important for women. VOOM should get this channel soon to get more business.

I'm with you Walter, HGTV is high on the list for my overall Voom experience. It and INHD 1/2 are the only reasons Comcast still has a box in my house.

Gents....... HGTV...
Look around your living room/bedroom.......
Are you telling me you don't need to improve the living conditions inside your house!?!

I've entered hundreds of homes unannounced (with a warrant), and trust me, a lot of you need help on decorating!

This coming from a single man, I have tried to show her who's boss, and I ended up with a black eye, painted house, Mowed lawn and no chance of getting voom. I'm not taking advise from you anymore :)

My wife really does enjoy this channel, however she's seen most of the episodes they're currently showing. She says HGTV doesn't really matter. I don't feel P/whipped. I LIKE doing things for her and considering her wishes. You guys are listening to too much Tom Leykis.;) It's great that they don't waste bandwidth with HSN/QVC and the like. We'll be keeping cable until I feel confident about rain fade not happening and the addition of HGTV. I'm not a big Sci-Fi channel fan, but would like to see InHD 1&2 and HDNET. I'm not holding my breath, but one can hope. New, more robust codecs would be nice. I'm getting so spoiled with D-VHS . Mark

Whew! What a relief, she loves Voom and HD :)

Thanks for the clarification. In my case it is not fear (strange to consider fear in any relationship, though) but just wanting to please her in more ways than one. She's a great person and watches so little of anything on tv other than HGTV.

HGTV? Geese i don't understand why someone would want that channel. But i am only 25 so i wouldn't understand. I personally want MTV Jams or called MTV2 and the Spice channel.. And that would really make me a extremely happy customer.

HGTV and Foodnetwork are necessary (WAF) to put Voom throughout the whole house. I have it only in the home theater now.

I agree the Heck with HGTV and also Si-fi ... .. . ..

ooooooops that may be sacrilege around this forum! :D

Seriously though HGTV, why not switch to TLC, Discovery, History, Ooutdoor life and one of the 35 hd channels whilst you all wait to have your darn HGTV.....I am sure your wife's can find SOMETHING to watch....if not that's an issue you need to deal with, but don't blame Voom. :D

HGTV, among others is the reason I will cancel voom. Anyone who thinks it's not important to please there wife is either divorced or will be divorced.

Besides, i have kept DTV as well as voom and the SD Picture on voom just does not compare. I watched part of last nights Laker game on DTV then went to voom. The voom picture was just terrible compared to DTV. The only channel Voom is superior on is Fox Sports World as my Toshiba STB gives me a lot of digital motion on the greens of the grass.

Sorry, I really wish Voom was better as the idea of HD content is great but most of the 21 exclusives are utter junk.

I came to this forum just to search on this HGTV topic. Believe it or not -- Voom not having HGTV is a deal breaker for me. Not because of my wife -- as I watch it more than she does. If you enjoy home improvement, building things or learning more about real estate, etc. -- it's a great channel for those that like woodworking or landscaping, etc..

How hard can it be to get this channel -- man, I'd settle for SD to start with -- but HGTV would be killer in hi-def. Me thinks some posters on this thread protests too much  sounds like it's possible that they may be insecure characters hiding bossy wives and trying to compensate by assuming that about others :) No problems here in that department. We've been together too long for that foolishness. Sorry, can't vote in the Poll, as there's no reply for it being a deal breaker for me personally.

While I can afford to keep cable and get Voom too, that just seems too wasteful for the few extra channels. Anyway, Voom seems to be growing nicely, so I have confidence that the best cable channels will eventually come to Voom sooner or later. Best to you all. Like what you watch and watch what you like...

One of the reasons I have to now have Direct installed- is that the wife wants HGTV.

And I'm not whipped, I'm churned. (or perhaps will be churn)

My wife watches it sometimes...but really this ch doesnt make or break us. I have Directv and VOOM currently because of other ch's that dtv has that VOOM doesnt have. HGTV is one of them that my wife likes but the kids like some other ch's and my wife likes QVC. In addition, if I didnt have DTV I wouldnt be receiving NBC or PIX....since I cant get them OTA. But to say that this one ch means that much....WOW.

It's been a couple of months since I've been with Voom. I assured the wife that HGTV and Food were coming. Apparently they're not. I'm keeping Voom, but the evil cable company is coming out tomorrow to install cable for those two channels. HGTV is OK, but we both really miss Food. At least I'm getting a dvr with cable.
