Those may all be true.

I have been hearing buzz we would see SCI-FI and USA around July.

So this may be accurate information.

The SD stuff I believe... the HD National feeds I doubt because of legal concerns. The NFL live HD game I REALLY doubt, unless they've worked a deal with the contract holders to carry the crappiest game of the week ;)

Wow thats really good news. Voom is working hard to fill in the holes. Lets see if they come through with those ch's. No mention of INHD 1 and 2 or HDNET.

Sean Mota
06-04-2004, 11:27 AM
Not sure about those NFL Games. This might just be NFL Game of the Week. As to National Feed of locals, I have to agree with people on those posts, it may be difficult but not impossible. However, I do not see how they are going to do all of this with MPEG2 right now. They need to move to either MPEG4/WM9 or start upgrading customers to their version of "Superdish".

The RSN has been discussed but they need space for these. Specially HD RSN.

Scott Greczkowski

No no mention of INHD1 or 2.

Yes but did the info come from a CSR?

tscallions
06-04-2004, 11:53 AM
When they say broadcasting National Feed of locals, does that mean doing away with the OTA antenna and receiving my locals in High Def over the satellite?

squicken
06-04-2004, 11:56 AM
No way they're doing a LIVE NFL game. Where's Techtv/G4? Like Scott said, no InHD. And is this just some CSR talking? If that's the case, I have some swamp land in Florida that is ripe for developent, if anyone's interested. :)

mkatts

Came from a CSR? I'll believe it when I see it. Until I tune in the channel and see it for myself. It's just speculation. :smug

And the thread just got even stranger:

"More VOOM rumors:

Strong unconfirmed rumor that Comcast will begin to carry some VOOM HD channels later this year (source does not want to be named, but is usually reliable)

This play makes a great deal of sense as VOOM only has something like 6,000 subs and needs $$$$

If they can do a pure transport deal and add VOOM programming ( some or all ) to their current HD line up that would enable VOOMs
acces to Comcasts base of 26million (or so) subs.

Moreover ,take a1%-5% penetration/consumer adoption rate into that 26million and VOOM is an overnight success.

Above fwiw; don't know if it is true, but I am passing on what I have heard"

Mark is generally pretty well clued in.

Pure Speculation:

madpoet, I can see as a logical way of doing business. Right now, the 21 commercial free exclusive bring no revenue but subscribers. Eventually, any HD channel exclusive to VOOM would have to go that route because they are very expensive to begin with. The production of HD content, legal rights to sports and movies is not cheap. I can see this as an alternative in creating $$$ or going the commercial way which does not look too good because you need a large base of subscribers to make money on commercials.

Shit, with all the new bandwidth that comes available I think Voom could add every channel that is broadcast worldwide. Yea...its a hell of alot of bandwidth. So much infact we have to get a "superdish". Now thats a statement on ones roof, "I have a SUPERDISH!" take that E* and D* suscribers.

I wouldn't mind Voom throwing on BBC America, at least for the one show that I would watch on there. For you guys that have seen The Office, there will soon be a new show starring Ricky Gervais, who played the boss in the show. Gervais will play a school teacher, and the show will feature many of the cast from The Office.

Good stuff, I highly recommend it. Probably one of the funniest shows I have ever seen (The Office). I didn't think anything would make me laugh more than Curb Your Enthusiasm, but well I found it. However, I see BBC-America a long way in coming for Voom, heck I see Voom a longer way in coming to me. DARN TREES.

If the rumors are true then I'll be happy with Sci Fi alone sometime in July, I can bug my neighbors on Friday nights for a week or two.

Sci Fi would be great in HD...but my wife needs QVC and DIY, and my kids need NICK WEST and NickTOONS, and my younger one needs Noggin.... I would like INHD. If they get the above ch's I would cancel my DTV and make the move to VOOM's full package as a sole provider.

Dvlos

USA and SCIFI SD. I guess it will satisfy those crying for those channels. They are irrelevant to me, just something reducing the available bandwidth for HD. I will not watch them. I would prefer Voom waited a year or two for the HD versions. WHich brings up an interesting question. When Voom adds an HD channel like TNTHD why not cut off the SD version of it? Why would anyone watch it?

Slick
06-24-2004, 07:13 PM

I agree completely vurbano, since TNTHD and TNT show the exact same thing anyway, and my SD TVs are set to crop to full screen anyway.. what's the point of making redundant SD channels.

Too bad we don't have HDNET since they have picked up the rights to rebroadcast Smallville in all of it's HD glory & in it's entirety. Our WB went HD just in time for the season finale and it looked great.

Kind of the same story around the ESPN timeframe, so hopefully it'll show up soon.

Sean,

I asked specifically about Sci Fi and gave them a time frame when I would like to see it, which was before July 16th.

vurbano
06-26-2004, 11:23 AM
It's called contracts...I can see how that would be true with some bundled movie channels, espnhd, espn2 etc since they show different content. But, it sounds absurd with an SD duplicate, especially since the voom reciever will allow you to watch the HD channel with the same content on an analog set. Hopefully someone will interject some common sense into the next contract.

Slick
06-26-2004, 06:42 PM
Eric please let it be before July 16th, I sound pretty pathetic but I do enjoy the shows I do watch.. Eric I thought you got the 30" dish? I had rain fade before it even started raining :-).. I e-mailed Wilt a couple days ago about getting a bigger dish but havent heard anything yet..

The actual Stargate Atlantis does not start till the 16th..I cancled my cable a tad early, I put to much confidence in Voom to have it by now, so I am taping it at my wifes grand mothers house tonight..

I more than likley will have to tape the new Atlantis Stargate there next friday as well.. Hey Eric if you want me to send you the tape, I will be more than happy to, after I watch it of course :-)..

Well lets hope we have it by next friday, but I am not holding my breath.. I love my Voom but they need to get some more channels if there SD or HD so people can watch what they like.. Cya Slick

HGTV is one of our families favorite channels -- not just "HGTV for the ladies," as so many post, as if too timid to admit they watch it. It's not a "ladies" channel. Landscapers Challenge, Designing for the sexes, House hunters, lots of landscaping stuff, Do-it-yourself projects for the garage and yard, etc. etc. Me, the wife, teen-agers, and older kids all love it. Great stuff. We can't switch to Voom until they carry HGTV. Pul-leeze, Voom, just get it already, so I can switch, already :)

Concerning INHD 1&2 that so many request. I don't see that happening any time soon. I get these 2 channels on Cox cable and under the logo bug, the tagline actually brags "Only on cable!" The PQ is great, but the content is only so-so. Voomers aren't missing much, but they're nice to have.

Eric_C

Got to watch SG1...

And also all the previews for the new shows coming on Sci Fi, including the Farscape Mini Series, the new Battlestar Galactica...plus a bunch of others.

HGTV just gives her more idea's, don't need that. :)

Just to let everyone know. I just got off the phone with voom (not a bad hold time btw less than a minute) I told them that I needed to cancel my installation because my wife was unaware that they didnt have the Food Network, HGTV, USA, G4TechTV, etc. The Sales guy on the phone quickly tried to give me a $40 credit to my account and explained that they were in contract negotiations with those companies. When I still said no he then asked to put me on hold and got his supervisor. The Supervisor came on the phone and then offered me $70 credit and explained that I could keep my existing satellite provider with Voom and compare the two. It sounded like a good deal to me so I took the bait. I also asked about the DVR he said that it isnt confirmed but they are expecting a launch date of mid-summer(end of July beginning of August) Coinsidently their promo ends 7/31/04. The Supervisior said that they would likely offer a rental or purchase option. Hope this helps anyone at least looking for a discount.

07-14-2004, 12:35 AM
Well I think what Voom's trying to tell you freaky, is that like in October we should see more SD channels, which is what that article said. Hopefully more HD channels too.

HeavyC
07-14-2004, 08:29 AM
Honestly, I bet you anything they have deals in place with lots of these SD channels already. VOOM has just sacraficed a few of them in the short term until they get the WM9/MPEG4 compression up and running. If they can add those SD channels, and get the regional sports networks up, all they'd have to focus on after that is adding every new HD channel as it hits the market.

Not providing the locals is the best decision they ever made. It will allow them so much freedom to provide tons and tons of HD content.
