Tobi please go to diagnostics > ISP Capacity Test, run this test, click the advanced tab, in the lower left hand corner of the window there will be a TEXT DATA link. If you don't mind please paste all the results or if you wish please send the actual test number in private.
On the Voip thing, I'm making a custom version of the test just for satellite ppl to at least attempt. I'm tossed between codecs at the moment and need to get some information back from Skype and a couple of others before it's available. For what it's worth I don't think they will pass any reasonable Voip test but willing to give it a try anyway.

Very obviously we have totally different concepts of what constitutes "flaming". Besides being a member of several satellite and satellite internet related sites, I'm also a moderator at one of them. I'm having a hard time rectifying those credentials - with your seemingly unfounded accusation.
Let the bandwidth hog stand up for him (or her) self. Or are you two in fact the same person?

Guys...how about taking your private issues up via PM ? There is some very interesting information in this thread, but it takes alot of weeding to get through it.
Thanks.

You are correct in that most consumer grade satellite internet connections do not support VoIP. A North American exception is in Canada, where VoIP can sometimes be more a matter of survival - rather than one of convenience like it often is here in the US. Some TeleSat resellers purposefully reconfigure their servers to prioritize VoIP packets for requesting subscribers.
But down here below the 48th, those packets typically get sent to the back of the bus. The satellite connections can in fact (technically) support VoIP, but the providers simply don't want to supply the bandwidth (to consumer grade subscribers). For those diehards that really and truly MUST have VoIP (over consumer grade satellite), they have to select a hardware solution - and at least a G.729 codec. Software solutions simply don't work. As such, I believe you'd be wasting your time testing for anything lesser.

I am not finding or seeing any test numbers. The very first test I ran I got a test # of 1073 but have not got one since. I am not registered at the site.

The VOIP test apperas to be making it past the NOC I can't tell for sure but the modem is responding tothe test.

Ok to stir the pot some more the previous test were run on a Hughes 9000 modem on spaceway III. These test are run on a Hughes 7000s modem on Satmex 5. The VSAT terminals are setting side by side less than 10 ft apart.

You don't need to be registered for full access to the diagnostics. If you click on detailed analysis you will see a test id in the url. Feel free to post here or pm me the id. Notice the QOS. QOS is something we need to address for satellite people and will be difficult at best. The calculation of QOS is complex and to be honest we're not in complete control of this portion of the test. What I don't want is to have people discouraged because we rate their QOS as poor when for satellite based internet their actual QOS might be very good.
I would expect voip traffic to route differently, that makes sense to me knowing what I know about Huges and the way they handle specific forms of traffic. I'm not convinced we'll be able to formulate a reasonable test but we're going to try. I'm thinking we need to use Skypes codec as the baseline. It's probably the only spec that has a prayer of passing. I'll do my best to dig up all that stuff late tonight.

(Don't forget the test right above this text is not a conventional speed test, the estimated bandwidth is only an estimate. To properly check use the Capacity Test).
Unless things have changed there have always been significant performance differences between birds. Must admit though those results especially the QOS surprise me. Can you get that consistently? That's encouraging though. I have complete faith in the testing methods. I know others may disagree but this is very good stuff used by many service providers worldwide. If anything is capable of licking this MCS is.
