I was searching amazon and came across a book called how to get free wifi, by building your own antenna. this sounds a lot like pirating to me, does anyone know anything about this or if it is legal?

If your neighbor doesn't encrypt his wireless network, he is basically inviting you to use it. Unless you are cracking his password to get on, its totally legit. He may not like it when he finds out but thats another story...Get the book and have fun exploiting your neighbors.

By the way, what does this have to do with satellite internet?....

Technically this sia broadband forum not a forum restricted to satellite internet.


I suspect that the ultimate broadband provider would question the legality of this method but ia m unsure of what civil or criminal penalties might exist----if any.

I have set these us to share internet in a shop 100 yards away. Not illegal

Actually, it may be illegal depending upon where you are. Several states call it unauthorized access to computer network or theft of service, although enforcement is spotty at best.

There are radios that you can buy that will allow you to transmit signals for several miles for as little as $150 a pair.

Line of sight links up to 11km are not unheard of. Maybe you could use it as an opportunity to set up encryption for your neighbors network and get an invite to use the service for the work. Wireless internet is not safe even with the best encryption available. I love how at&t dsl has the 2wire gateways setup with 64bit encryption by default, and some users are not even aware they have an AP broadcasting. Especially one that can be cracked in less than five minutes. I see no harm at all in connecting to a public AP even if you have to use an extender to get signal, thats why I casually connect my wrt54g to a nearby cafe, after all its a public AP!
