Sounds like the premise of the now canceled BBC-America series Survivors.

This is "Season 2", and much more realistic than last year's version.
Last year, I remember one actor who always had spotless clothes, wore makeup, etc. Also, there was the "MacGyver(?) effect": the actors were able to perform MAGIC with the bits and pieces they found lying around. But I watched the entire season, so I obviously found it entertaining enough.
This year, I've watched the first two episodes so far. It's much more realistic. Some of the things they've tried have failed (I don't remember a single failure last year). They have some tools, but are scraping and improvising a lot more. And, maybe it's only for the camera, but they're all beginning to look a bit dirty. Finally, encounters with "outsiders" are much more violent, which is what you would expect when society totally breaks down and it's "survival of the fittest".
