Add my own cable box

I realize this is a very basic question but I just got Optimum cable. I have alwas owned my Dish receivers. I rent the Scientific Atanta HD 8300. Can I buy another receiver and connect it myself or do I have to pay Optimum to rent it? They charge $9.95 a month. I would not mind paying $5.99 like dish but this seems high. I am not looking to do anything illegal just tring to save money.

You can't buy a SA box and use it, CV won't authorize it to work. You can buy a TIVO and use it thought. Eventually there will be more boxes that you can buy and use with CV, The boxes will need a cable card slot and you then rent the cable cards from CV for $2 a month.
