Explorer 8300 checking signal strength

I have an Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 (non HD). Does anyone know how to check the signal strength?

Via remote, press and hold the pause button until the mail icon flashes on the box! Then press page up, you should be in the box diagnostic screen then.

How does one get to the diagnostic screen for the HD DVR?
I've been experiences programs that I set to record stoping in the middle of the recording. Example Cane only recorded 17 mins. This is random but with in the last 6 months its happened 20 or more times.
