I wonder if this is part of the reason why the new R10 has newer software and that the existing DTivos will be getting the new software?

According to the press release, it will not be available to cable and satellite boxes, just stand-alone TiVo units.

Looks like Tivo is trying to attract consumers to their standalone products making them more attractive due to the fact that DirecTv is going in-house with their DVR's.

I see that they got some publicity on the news tonight.
