Question How do I activate a purchased Motorola Dual-Tuner DVR HD DCT6412?

    ADVERTS 1
Purchased a Comcast DVR box off of eBay to replace my rented box. Tried to contact Comcast and activate it. Comcast said they will only support new boxes. Is there a way to obtain a security card that will allow the box to work? Thanks.

Unfortunately any boxes purchased from E-bay are likely stolen, as US cable companies do not sell equipment. No US cable company will activate any Motorola (or SA) boxes purchased from an outside source.

Yea you're pretty much beat. You can try to sell it on ebay again or better yet if you paid through Paypal file a dispute and return it. Make sure you get tracking info on your return.

Wasn't there a new law that took place where if you buy your own cable box the cable company must provide a cable card?

But the 6412 doesn't have cable card capability. He's screwed.

Hmm I believe this is the same receiver I have HD dual tuner DVR mark III and it has a card slot on the right.
Here is a picture on Motorola's site.

That is not a cable card slot. It is a security card slot

Cable cards look more like PCCards
