how can you tell? its a cartoon! how do you know this isn't stretched?

because when you watch for example family guy on tbs you can tell it's stretched at the corners if you look carefully. it's harder to notice on a cartoon but you can still see it. this episode of south park is not stretched at all.

You can see all of the fibers in the paper cutouts. Something you cannot see in SD. The picture is many times clearer.

Just by flipping back and forth between the SD and HD channels it's easy to tell that the show is true HD. There was scene in which all the kids were singing together and there was kids on the side of the HD version that were missing from the SD version.

Honestly, I do not think there is a need to explain why it is in HD. If someone can not tell, they need to adjust their settings, use the correct cables or get a new tv
