Here's a place that has them for a little cheaper,
DirecTv Hr23 : Digital Video Recorders / Video [ 2 Reviews ]
. Plus this way you know you'd be getting a new receiver, from DirecTV could be a HR23, could be a refurb HR20.
Dish - Slimline 5LNB
Switches - Dual SWiM16
Receivers - HR23-700, HR24-200, 4xHR24-500
Networking - 100/1000Mbps switched ethernet and DECA for DirecTV network

The HR10-250 is obsolete as far as todays HD goes.. It doesn't do mpeg4. You need an HR20 up to an HR23 for use in todays DirecTV

And how did you verify that the box was 'owned' and not leased? If you didn't you should have caled DirecTV with the RID of the box to verify that it wasn't a lease and that it was free and clear, no outstanding charges against it.
As to your question, unless you have a SWiM LNB or switch then yes it will need the BBC's connected inline on the coax.
