HD-DVR without service?

Is it possible to take a DirecTv HD-DVR receiver with atsc tuner, and use it as a DVR for HD locals, without subscribing to anything from DirecTV?

As far as I know the HR10-250 was the last DVR that could use the ATSC tuner without a subscription but the TiVo didn't work without a subscription.
