    Transfering a receiver to someone

    ADVERTS 1
I recently upgraded to HD and have a spare 501 receiver. I would like to give it to my inlaws since they have dish network and would like a DVR receiver. What do I have to do to transfer this receiver to them? Do they use the smart card from their current receiver?

Assuming you own the DVR (not leased), just give/sell it to them. Once its hooked up, they can call dish network & have it activated.

Leave the smart card in the DVR - you cannot move the cards from receiver to receiver.

I owned my 501 and gave it to my dad. They sent back one of their leased 311s and now have an additional DVR w/no DVR fee.

You have to own the 501 before you can transfer it. Call DISH and release it from your account. All that is necessary after that is the new owner calling and adding it to their account.

Thanks for the replies. I own the 501. Dish was going to only give my a $10 credit to turn it in to them. I'll call dish to remove the receiver from my account so it can be transferred to my inlaws.
