    When the Installer Comes..

    I have a flat screen tv mounted above my fireplace mantle. I have component cables (mine, not the cable companies) that run through the wall into my entertainment tower. When the installer comes to put in my dish, I won't have to take out my cables will I? I want to leave my normal cables in so I don't have to lift this 80 pound thing off the wall. Thanks!

    assuming you still want to go with component you will not need to remove the cables.

    If he tells you he has to use his own cables, let him hook it up with his cables and as soon as he leaves, take them off and use your own. The guy that hooked mine up said he couldn't hook it up any other way than with the YRW RCA hookups because he only had YRW cable. I told him it would work in the component hookups as long as the wires went to the corresponding jacks and he looked at me like I was speaking Chineese. He hooked it up YRW, told me I had HD, and as soon as he left I hooked it up HDMI, which was sitting there hooked up to the TV and run through the wall and sitting where the box was going to be installed. He told me he couldn't use that cable because it wouldn't work with E*. These dopes don't have a clue. The big kicker was he aligned the dish great!

    as long as the component and audio cables terminate where the receiver is to be placed, you're good to go.
    One rant...The newer cheap mounts that nearly flush the tv against the wall are a nightmare. As opposed to the ones that allow the user to "swing" the tv off the wall either horizontally or the ones that swing like a gate, the flush mounts force the user to remove the tv entirely to move/ replace any cables.

    HE didn't have a clue. PLease do not generalize. Many of us(techs) know a heck of lot more than some of you give us credit for.

    The 'knowledge" level seems to vary wildly between market areas. In this part of Texas it would appear that the lion's share (mostly Jamaican) have the I.Q. of a common houseplant. While they're able to do a good job performing the repetitive tasks associated with a system install, they impress me as having scarce "knowledge" of the technology behind what they're doing. This became evident after the initial pole mount (1000.2) was installed too close to the side of the house to provide a clear shot at 129. Three service calls, 2 receiver replacements and 5 total techs later the last guy pulls an inclinometer out of his bag and takes a sighting. Finally someone with a brain.

    Many times a bad tech( wiht limited or no technical knowledge) gets confused with the concept of a lazy one
    . The first thing I would have looked at in your case would have been the line of sight. Finding what was found, I would have relocated the dish to assure good recption. It sucks having to cover another tech's ass. But it is what it is.

    Try most. Gotta love these know it all customers who think they know more than the people who do this for a living. Like the guy who argued and argued with me about running the sat cable through his "Monster" power supply, and refusing to let me change out his "gold" barrels on his wall plate. Apparently as soon as I left, he unhooked my connections, and ran the cable through his stupid power supply, and used a piece of "Monster" RG59 (argued with him about that too) from the power supply to the receiver. 2 months later we were back out at that jackass's house to replace his "gold" barrels, and run a straight cable from the wall plate to his receiver. Glad it was another tech who did the service call. I wasn't the least bit interested in talking to him again.

    I don't rum satellite thru these devices, I don't care if the cust claims they are sat compatible or not. I just do the work the way I see as the best away and will reduce the propbability of a trouble call. If the customer gives me an indication that he will run the cable thru the surge protector after I leave, I have him sign off a statement I write to that effect on the work order . I also will have my dispatch enter this info into the account notes. We have to do whatever we can to cover ourselves from this nonsense.
    BTW on a coule of occasions I have gotten frustrated with a customer enough to feign handing him my tool bag. That shuts them up right away

    That's the type of customer they make the security collars for. Slip it over the fitting, screw it down w/the security tool and leave. It's just as bad for us w/phones. There are a couple in my bldg I've had to cut off the tips of the release pins of the RJ11 connectors. If brains were gasoline, there are a few folks who don't have enough to run a pissant's motorcycle one revolution around the inside of a Cheerio. (....and no, you do not have my permission to use that as a .sig line)
