I want to transfer HD recordings from vip722 to PC so that I cam make hd video collection...

is this possible? if yes how?

If not I am thinking of buying a HDTV PC tuner so that I can reocord on PC and create video collection later...do you think any issue in this approach?

Dish dvr recordings are encrypted, you can transfer them and burn a dvd but they will not play. The recordings can only be played back on Dish dvr's. You can record them real time onto a dvd by using a dvd recorder.

The cheapest thing is the Hauppauge 1212. You can't use an cheap ATSC tuner because the DVR doesn't output ATSC.

hmm so one thing is getting confirm...its not possible to have HD recording move to PC without a HD card....

so next option, buying a hdtv tuner like "ATI Theater HD 750" and connect vip722 to this card (hoping there's a connector like hdmi on such card) and record the shows live....or infact do the hd recording first on 722 and then play that on TV tuner and record then?

    anybody tried any such approach?

That is still a HDTV tuner card and the VIP series DOES NOT output an ATSC or clear QAM TV signal. The USB output is highly encrypted and the HDMI is set with DRM so you can't record from it. The only way to get the HD out that is recordable is by using component. I don't think that there are any cards that will input that signal for a reasonable price.

Dish doesn't want you doing this so they made it very hard to accomplish inexpensively.

You can record HD from the component output of the receiver with the Hauppauge 1212 ($160 - $200). I think there is another than records HD as well but I can't recall it now.
