I just called dish and of course when prompted I kept saying cancel and got to a retention csr pretty quick. I was told that starting in feb they are going to have a promo that will replace some receiver's for free. In my case I would be able to replace my 522 that I use in single mode and my 322 in dual mode with 3 211's or 3 211k's for free,of course with a 24 month commitment. This would result in my bill only going up $5 and having 3 HD boxes to go with my other 3 HD TV's with the ability to be dvr's. Since I already have paid the $40 fee that would be not so bad. I would call this a carrot that may or may not be true, we'll see
The downside is that I would be back under contract after being contract free for over 5 years. If this turns out to be true what is the difference between a 211 and a 211k? Of course I will still bitch in hopes of getting a monthly credit

One other thing I was able to tell from my call is that, after working the csr for awhile, they will be trying to overcome the onslaught of complaints by touting their superior dvr's. He kept going back to the fact that they have such great products each time I pointed out that I would have a large increase in my bill. We only have ourselves to blame because of all the positive comments about most of their VIP's and the great features, SH#T I did it again. Ummh, except for the constant buggy updated software.

Quality is inversely proportional to price. For $5, it's a great DVR. For $17 (plus the DVR fee), it's not as great. I have a 722 and a 522 (which I got when I signed up back when it was brand new) and AEP. The only reason I have AEP is that it was cheaper than the package I had before, after adding the 2 DVR fees. After getting an HDTV and a 722, I didn't really need the 522, but I already had it and it didn't cost any more than a single receiver at the time.
Now that Dish has 'simplified' my prices, I can make them more 'complex' again by dropping AEP since it no longer saves me any money. Also, with the new 'simplified' cost of the 522, I'll return that and replace it with a 211k (I already paid the $39 for another 211k I have in my motor home). Dropping from AEP will save me the $6.00 DVR fee and replacing the 522 will return the 2nd receiver fee to $7. That should get my subscription cost to be about the same as it is now.
Typically, companies use rates to drive you to what they want you to buy. With these new 'simple' rates, Dish must feel like their support costs are rising too high and they want to encourage people to eliminate additional receivers. They got my attention!
By the way, based on my reading of Dish's announcements, 'simplify' must be marketing speak for 'substantial price increase'. From that I inferred that 'complex' must mean 'no substantial price increase'. I have always been a fan of 'complex'.Last edited by mrschwarz; 01-22-2010 at 06:45 AM.

I know there was a thread a while back on bills, but my hd bill will be going down. I currently get Top 250, HBO and Showtime. I also get billed $10 for HD twice, once for gold and once for platinum. Am I getting overcharged ?

Sure sounds like it with many looking at their bills mistakes will be found. and shopping around for better deals too.
E may not be happy since everyone is offering teaser rates for 2 year contracts.
So long time sub gets new simplified bill that went up. Many may not call E but just sign a contract at a teaser rate with someone else, then call to cancel once the new provider is in place.
E has no recovery of sub they are a certain churn since they signed a contract with someone else.
Frankly I dont like contracts, teaser rates, extraoridnary fees, buggy software and 20% cost increases. guess I dont like much
