    Unhappy Helping brother in law.

    ADVERTS 1
My brother in law wanted to dump Time Warner and go with Dish.
He even went so far to order the 250 gold package.
Then he talked to me about the DVR function. He says that he can record two programs and watch a third at the same time with his TW system.
When I told him that he can't do that with any Dish DVR he does not want to do over the air which I said that was the only he could do what he wants. So he canceled his dish order.
Now he has a older Philips tube HD TV and they have something called AV inputs and he has basic cable on one AV, digital on another AV and HD on another AV so I think that is how he is recording two and watching a third.
I spent two hours at his house trying to help him decide what he wanted. I actuality wasted those two hours. Oh well I almost got the $50 off my bill.

well the 722K can record 2 sat feeds, with 2 OTA feeds, at the same time.

while watching 2 seperate feeds at the same time.

so it would do more than he can now.

but given the fee increase I will NEVER recommend E to anyone again!

I am bvery concerned over the years perhaps a hundred friends got E on my suggestion, many are multi DVR familys

They will no doubt call me to complain Frankly I will suggest each and everyone they cancel., since E is no longer a low price leader

As mentioned, the Dish VIP 722 and a few other DVRs have the ability to do exactly what your BIL wanted. I do it all the time, the DVR has two satellite tuners and one OTA tuner. You gave him the wrong information. He can always reorder.

The dish 722K with OTA module has 2 sat tuners plus 2 OTA tuners.

So with a antenna it can record 4 things at once while waching 2 other pre recorded shows. Must be tough on the hard drives.

The never released 922 is supposed to do even more

The OP states that his BIL does not want OTA, so the module or not doesn't matter. The OP doesn't realize that some Dish DVRs have two satellite tuners. That is the question I answered.....

He MIGHT get decent OTA with a indoor antenna.

Some think BIG on the roof antennas are needed. Sometimes they are.

He's doing some PIP trickery. Pretty clever, but not necessary with a Dish DVR. All boxes since at least the 625 have had the ability to do PIP inside the box, without running lots of cable packs to the TV. With a 612 (which has a built-in OTA section like the old 722/622), you just tell it what you want to record, it ties up up to three tuners, and then you go back and watch what you actually want to watch, prerecorded, live, or delayed.

Have you shopped around lately? I hate to sound like a Charlie Fanboy (because I'm NOT), but they still have more content for less money, and the new fee structure still keeps their cost at or near what the national cable companies charge. At the end of the month, unless you're one of those guys with six DVRs, Dish is still the cheapest. And until the new DirecTV RVU box comes online, they still have the best hardware.

If your BIL has two TV's and can handle SD on the second TV, the new price will only increase $1-2, this assumes he will want the local channels (they used to be a $5 option now they are required > 2/1)
