i have a 612 dvr and would like to transfer programs from dvr to external hard drive. i would like to then transfer from ext drive so i could burn to dvd. Any tips would be appreciated

No way

You are asking a question that has been answered many times. You can't burn off the ext HDD. There is only one way to do it: play the material and burn it to DVD in real time. That is the only way period.

External HD is heavily encrypted, but the internal one is not unless you copied programming to the EHD then copied it back.

If the material is MPEG2, it can be read (see Yahoo group dishrip), but MPEG4 cannot.
