The programmers will win. After everyone gets 2-3 HD PVRs each, signs up for all the hd channels, sports networks and movie channels, the studios are going to jack up licensing fees for broadcast rights. They will all claim its due to signal theft and the revenue they lose because of internet-movie swapping. The system operators will have no choice but to pass the increases on to the customers. The uproar from the customers will be heard in Washington. Eventually.

Directv Wins my vote
Much of my heartfelt bias in favor of Directv has to do with Charlie Ergen. I became familiar with Mr. Ergen while employed at Winegard back when folks were erecting 10ft "C" band dishes and Charlie was peddling Echostar and Houston Tracker IRDs out the back of his van in Nashville. While he epitomizes all the qualities of a great entrepreneur he has a horrible reputation for the treatment of his employees. Aside from the usual grumblings around town that he overworks and underpays the rank and file, he is known to be verbally abusive.
My second objection is Charlie's utter lack of respect for the marketing profession. It's both his hubris and arrogance that he won't invest appropriately in the function. Basically his strategy is to leverage the discontentment with cable and penetrate the market with low prices. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to go that route. Talk to any cable subscriber from Chicago about their cable service. A decade ago when TCI went black on the Bulls during the NBA playoffs. You still hear folks in Chicago reminicing with vitriolic passion over this inexcusable moment in cable history.
I can't say his ad campaigns show much imagination--perhaps the "WOW" ads represent the best effort out of that shop.
From a product perspective, Dish ain't bad--especially on the lower end and to some extent, I like their packages a bit better than DIRECTV, and when the folks at DIRECTV decided to shy away from TiVO and start building their own box, I think Dish probably is sitting a bit prettier with their DVR product. But based on my back of the napkin tally in focus groups, there is a lot more complaining about their customer service than the folks out of El Segundo.
DIRECTV has done a good job with NFL ticket and the quality of the HD line-up that they do offer seems good. (Not sure the 1080i is really 1080i), but Discovery and UHD a few others are looking mighty decent.
At the end of the day we can probably expect John Malone to be running them both. After all, it was none other than Al Gore that proclaimed Dr. Malone as the "Darth Vader of the cable industry."
