Hi there!
The timing of this could not be worse.
I have a Dishplayer 7100 (yeah, I know
) that is on its final death-spiral, I think, since it's starting to power itself off and get into the "Connecting to WebTV" loop that requires a hard power cycle to clear.
To replace it I recently bought a Dish 921 receiver off of eBay (used -- I called Dish prior to purchase with the R00 and S00 numbers and it was clear). UPS claims they're delivering it Monday 9/21.
Now I wonder if Dish Network will activate it at all? It *was* activated prior to 4/18, but it's not currently activated since its previous owner replaced it to go to a multi-room setup.
I never subscribed to the PVR features on the 7100 (pause was free, but no scheduled recording, rewind, etc.). If they don't activate the PVR (and waive the ~$6 PVR fee) that'd be fine with me, as long as they activate the receiver. I'd love to get the PVR features (one of the reasons I chose a 921), and I'll gladly pay the PVR fee, but even if I can't have that for a while, that's okay as long as they turn the receiver on.

Since the court nor TiVo can't verify one way or the other the code is actually different outside of going through all of it line by line the things look to get turned off. Looks like I have to tell the ol lady when she gets home to start watching the carp that's on it now since there is no telling how long she has to watch it.
If the receiver can't be used with the hard drive yanked all the DVR owners are going to get hosed.

Why do you guys continue to bloviate after Jim posted this (Notice of Tivo Injunction)? It's obvious that Dish doesn't need to do anything right away, other than not to activate the 4 specific models. Those with existing activated receivers are also not (yet) affected.

Remember, it was Dish that said they didn't infringe and would win the jury trial.
It was Dish that said they would win the appeal.
It was Dish that said the patent office would rule TiVo's patents invalid.
None of that happened and you want to believe them now when they say they don't have to comply with the injunction?

The main thing is that stands out for me is that the DVR's listed are all MPEG2, as far as I know TIVO doesn't have and has never had a MPEG4 capable DVR.

TiVo's patent doesn't mention a particular version of MPEG. It just says "MPEG". The models listed specifically in the injunction are all the models that existed at the time of the trial. Newer models are covered by the "not more than colorably different" phrase in the injunction.

As far as I know I got 2 or 3, 721's in stock still in factory plastic that we got back from RMA's. No biggie by the looks of things I think this just prevents them from being activated or resold and activated on a different account. Atleast we are not shutting off existing customers.
The question is that if I did an RMA on them, what will I get back
