ADVERTS
I have an old 501 in the closet. I wonder what happens if I try to reactivate it.
If it "breaks" later, will I get an upgrade???Scooter S.

Wondering the same, I have a 501 active along with my 722, but have a 721 in the closet I was holding on to as a back up if needed, and a 508, which the outside cover is broken, but internally works fine which I was going to use the shell of the 501 to swap the guts.
Not ready to throw this stuff out yet...

If people have un-used receivers that are affected by the ruling, I might be tempted to activate them quickly. When Dish runs their query on what receivers need replaced, you'll likely be given a new, compliant receiver.

The 501 should be good to go. They were one model that got the new "software upgrade", so there not suppose to be included in the injunction.

If the 501 got the update, this should also apply to the 508 and 510.

The injunction doesn't have any provisions that allow a work-around. The injunction says to shut them down. Period. That's why it's called "FINAL JUDGMENT AND PERMANENT INJUNCTION". Final and permanent. The infringement question phase is over after a 3 year court battle. Now comes the compliance phase... compliance with the court order to shut them down. The question of whether there is a work-around won't even come up. The judge will ask whether the models on the infringing model list have been shut down. If Dish says "no" they will be fined millions of dollars a day until they comply.

DISH would not shut down all their DVRs, it would be the death knell. More probable is the buyout of Tivo. Then sue Comcast and others to recover any financial losses.

Dish will do whatever it takes to keep the DVRs on, they will lose a good % of their customers if they were to lose the DVRs. I for one would bolt pretty quick (probably give them a week to make the deal).
TiVo probably wants $1/sub/month...
