This is nothing new. Anytime you downgrade anything with D* within 30 days of adding a service its a $10 fee. Been like this for awhile now. In other words anytime you upgrade a service you must kep it for 30 days before you can downgrade. Or you pay $10
E* it doesn't matter if you had it for 30 years your still going to pay a downgrade fee everytime you downgrade.
Unless you use the automated phone service to downgrade Premiums only.

I didn't think E* allowed you to automatically downgrade programming. Now that D wants $10 to downgrade so will E.

I was under the impression that this was for premiums only (even then you could change from one premium to another of the same price for no fee). In any case, doesnt seem to be a new thing, as pointed out.
Edit: Dont forget that this info apparently came from a CSR., and the O.P. didnt get charged.www. sonicbabble.com The best non sat discussion on the net

When I was with E* it was always $5. to downgrade programming no matter how long.

With D* after 30 days was no charge.
Here's a new one for E* subs to laugh at.New D* subs are having their prices locked in until 2010.

They charge you 5-10$ to do something that costs them pennies to do (only cost would be to take your call, cheaper if they let you do it online) Thats crazy. Imagine if cell phone companies did that, or cable companies.

They charge that amount because people, being people, would look for cheap ways around everything. If there was an event or movie they wanted to see on HBO, they would add the channel to their account, then disconnect the next day. At $12/month, the daily pro-rated cost to the customer is $.40. A very cheap pay-per-view for them, but not financially viable for the provider or the distributor.
