Thread: is HD pixelation normal from up close

I just got a 722k on my 50'' Samsung PN50B550

with DishLatinoMax with Locals & $10 Hd package

and i notice some pixelation on hd channels that is annoying when viewing wthin 3-5ft of tv is this normal as in Dish Network over-compressing the hd channels .

also the aspect ratio on hd channels is set to Normal on my 722k. connection to tv is HDMI . also the tv is set to the the native 16x9 picture mode. 722k is set to 1080i in the settings.

My friend has the same tv as me and when i watch bluray on his tv theres no major pixelation just sharp image even up close. he has directv and the pixelation is less noticeable.

Any input would be welcomed

Yes, I would think SOME pixelation is normal when you're watching ANY kind of broadcast from that close. The bigger the screen, the further away you're supposed to sit from it. When you go to the movies do you sit in the front row?

Dish, Direct, cable, and even OTA (especially w/sub channels) all compress their signals. The amount they (cable/sats) compress a specific channel varies, as does the software they're using to do the compression. Blu-Ray on the other hand, doesn't need to compress (or at least not nearly as much as the broadcasters). That's about as "pure" a signal as you're going to get.

ETA: compare the menu settings between the two TVs. You might have an adjustment (sharpness?) that "shows off" the compression more or he may have a setting that helps hide it.

No, it is not normal.

I have a Sony CRT projector with a 84 inch display and Only when there is a signal issue do I see pixellation.

You may see some minor macro blocking when the entire scene is in high motion, such as viewing a waterfall up close and such due to the compression engine not being able to keep up with that many pixel changes.

If you see too much check your signal levels (Menu, 6, 1, 1) and see if they are in the 60's (ono western arc).

I think the original poster may be referring to Macroblocking as Pixelating. Pixelating is not normal, but some macroblocking is. Macroblocking does vary greatly from channel to channel, and even among different programs on the same channel.

Yes, macroblocking is one of the banes of putting a 1080X1920 HD frame into a 6 mhz bandwidth.

In order for it to fit, you must compress it and high motion scenes will not be completely refreshed in the time allotted.

I have a DPP 1000.2 w/seperator how do i check signal strength of 129 just to make sure its optimized for hd viewing.

You are watching 3-5ft away? Or,
you notice this pixelation from 3-5ft away?

I have a 42inch Panny Plasma (720p model)
and when I view certain fast moving broadcasts I can see the pixelation from 8-10ft away.


You also are trying to compare Blu-Ray (which displays maximum bit rate/uncompressed picture quality versus a compressed signal broadcast.

It has been said DirecTV has superior HD quality than Dish.
Then there is also proximity limitations/and or interference or signal degradation that could be affecting your signal.

Just an opinion but I think you are watching TV too close for a 50 inch.
