vip622 freezing up and resetting
ADVERTS 1
My VIP 622 DVR has started to act up. At least once a day the picture will freeze, then the receiver will shut off and reboot. This requires that it acquire the satellite signals - which takes about 10 minutes. The latest twist in addition to this is that is now has to re-download the program guide - another 10 minutes. The left side of the receiver appears warm, so I suspected a thermal issue. The receiver has been in an open front TV cabinet for 3-4 years. I did cut 2 openings in the fiber board of the cabinet to facilitate cooling. This appeared to help for a couple weeks, but now we are back to the freezing/resetting issue.
Is it time for a new receiver? From the posts I've read, the VIP 722 DVR appears to be my best bet for a replacement?
Also, in preparation for this, is there any way to copy my DVR recording to an external hard drive? If so, can someone provide the size drive I would need with some instructions.
Thanks in advance.

My receivers have been rebooting several times a day after the last firmware update. I wanted to see some channels I have locked out and after I unlocked system I had no reboots for a couple of days! Today I re-locked the system and the receiver started rebooting again after a few hours. Others might try this.

Just be aware if you get a replacement it's going to be another 622. Unless the dirt team can get you swapped to a 722.

I just wanted to clarify something, when we create a return authorization (replacement) it would be for the same receiver. It would be no different than calling in and talking to a CSR.

My 622 has been doing this too. Started with the last software upgrade to L710.

I'm still contemplating what I'm going to do regarding this receiver. Holding off on calling Dish customer service, as my past experiences with them have been painful. In the meantime. I want to do 2 things. I want to be able to check the temperatures of my receiver. I remember reading a post that documented the steps through the menu to do this. Also, I want to start copying my DVR recordings to an EHD in preparation for a replacement receiver. I have also seen forum posts on how to do that, but am unable to find them. Anyone have thoughts on the 2 items above, or do I need to contact dish directly?

To check the temperature using the following screen:
By hitting Menu-6-3 This will take you to the Diagnostics screen.
Then select on "Counters"
You will need to Page Down till you get to "Hard Drive counters" It will show HDD High Temp & HDD Low Temp.
To transfer recordings, just hook up an external hard drive to the USB port on the receiver and it will format to the receiver and then you just transfer. this is a very easy process which is outlined
here

OK the temps are as follows: Hi Temp =132, Low Temp =96, Ave Temp = 118. Are these within range or is overheating my problem? The receiver did a reset this morning after only being on for about 30 minutes. I realize it never really shuts off, as I can hear the hard drive spinning constantly.
A couple other readings I noticed while scrolling through the diagnostics. Lost Locks : 7 : 78. Does this mean anything? Also my current software version is L710. From reading other posts on this forum, it appears this could be a software issue?
