I'm new and thinking about FTA. has anyone had much luck finding NFL / NHL Games on any free netwok channels? I would like to get the local networks/or Games for Pittsburgh PA, and Boston MA, is this something I could find somwewhere on FTA?

not really
most pro sports are scrambled
University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs mens hockey team
Defending National Champions
current number 3 in the country (but doesnt mean much honestly)
number 3 in the pairwise (this means everything...top 15 teams get in the tourney)
Life is good

Unless they are broadcast to a local market and that market happens to have an FTA presence.
Like Ice said, not very likely.

Almost none of the backhauls are encrypted. It's just that they are usually on C-Band and in 4:2:2 so it takes more costly equipment to pick up

In layman's terms it is a different digital video format. You need an expensive receiver or a PC card to see it.
